Enochlophobia

Sometimes it takes a long time for me to clue in. On Saturday we went to see the Kite Festival and famed cherry blossoms in DC. We had a great time, along with the rest of the Northern VA/Maryland/DC population. There were people everywhere, waiting in line with us for Metro tickets, squished and standing with us on the Metro, walking along with us on the Mall as we viewed a sky full of kites, and herded together with us like cows as we made our way slowly, oh so slowly to the tree-lined Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial. It was quite a sight. I finally understood why these wise-cracking kids I heard as we entered the Mall said, "Man! All this for some TREES!" Those clowns were right. I'm glad I came and saw and did, but I'm not in ANY hurry to attend other Festival/holiday events! :)

Hard to see these up close, but there were literally kites up and down the field.

Very fun rugby game going on.

The famous DC Cherry Blossoms!

Jason took these great pictures. I think they really capture the beauty of the trees and give you a very good idea of how packed the people were!

Part 3: Jamestown Settlement

Our April issue of FamilyFun magazine came in the mail today, and there was an entire article devoted to Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. How cool is that! :)

Inside a Powhatan hut--this Indian village recreation was fun because Rhiannon had studied this tribe in school at the beginning of the year.

Scraping fur off an animal hide!

This "sailor" on one of the replica ships was super-nice!

The kids loved climbing in the bunks on the ship. I was okay with that, as long as they didn't lay down on the mattress!

There were 3 ships total, and 2 of them were accessible to climb all over.

Part 2: Historic Jamestowne

Rhiannon, Wade, and Pocahontas

On Saturday we left Williamsburg to discover the other parts of the "Historic Triangle." We visited Jamestown first, seeing both "Historic Jamestowne" where the actual settlement was located, and "Jamestown Settlement," a living museum like Colonial Williamsburg--more expensive but lots of hands-on fun for the kids to do. Connect to our Flickr site link below to see more pictures of the place...

Part 1: Colonial Williamsburg!

First off, Happy Belated Birthday to Colton!!!!! We hope he had a great one.

Second, Happy Easter! We have enjoyed a nice day today and hope you did, too.

Third, we have had an exceptionally awesome Spring Break! It will be tough to get back to reality tomorrow, but I'm sure our fun memories will keep us going until the next big adventure. Tonight I put some pictures together to give you a small taste of our first stop on the trip--Colonial Williamsburg. Basically it's this town full of several costumed actors and guides who take you back in time and give you a very good idea of what life might have been like right around the time we were thinking of declaring our independence from England. Enjoy the pics!

Fun on a gray day

Early in the week we had a warmer-than-usual day with rain on the way. The weather held just long enough for us to get a much-needed park day in. Rhiannon and Wade headed for the double slide. They made a game out of crawling up the slide to escape "the Kraken." Of course, Rhiannon was Elizabeth Swann and Wade was Will Turner.

Spring will change these trees soon. I still think it's pretty in a scary, black-and-white kind of way. :)

Go ahead, it's okay. Brush that strand of hair out of her eyes. You know you want to!

Check out those rosy cheeks--thank heavens for good weather and fun exercise!

Justice League?

This is what you find in Wade's "dress-up" box...
Good thing we had 3 of them!
