Good grapes/ghastly garden

Our grapevine produced a lot of grapes this summer. Here's a picture of what I took from the vine yesterday--it doesn't include the couple other times that I cut several bunches down. They're tasty, especially frozen!

After looking online for different grape preserve/jam recipes, I decided to pass on that idea. Most of the recipes I looked at said you needed to take the skin off the grapes first, and, um, there is no way I'm going to do that. The grapes are a small variety (champagne grapes?) and it's enough of a hassle just picking them from the stems to put in little freezer bags.

We delivered bags of grapes to some of our older neighbors yesterday, and they were thrilled, both with the grapes and with us coming in and visiting a while. We should do that more often.

So the grapes have done well, but our garden has not. No gardening effort is ever wasted, though--we always learn something new from our experiment. The last garden we did was in 2006, so we were anxious to do something! We've had a bit of cilantro, and a few zucchini plants are starting to grow. One tomato plant is growing plenty of height and leaves, but we haven't seen any actual tomatoes yet. :) For starters, we'll need to:

1. Get the soil in better shape. Jason did a good job turning it over, but we hadn't added enough "good stuff" to the dirt to make it garden-friendly. It took us at least 2 years in the old house to get the soil ready.

2. Plant much earlier, probably end of March or early April, instead of the end of May.

Toby the Tortoise is still alive and doing well. He doesn't like his cage too much--when he's awake he spends most of his time pacing around the edge and pushing up against the plastic walls. Every day we try to give him a little time outside in the lawn--he takes little nibbles of the grass and weeds and goes and goes and goes. Somebody has to be out there with him, so that

a) we don't lose him or accidentally step on him,
b) ravens don't eat him, and
c) we can help him out if he flips over (so far this has happened 2 or 3 times).

One day I sent the kids out there with paper and colored pencils, so they could draw pictures of Toby. The kids really enjoyed that, and their pictures were pretty good!

3-Ingredient Cookies

I found a fun, easy recipe on the DealsToMeals blog. It passed the "kid test," so I thought I'd share!

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 box spice cake mix
1 15 oz. can of pumpkin (or half of a larger can)
Chocolate chips to taste

Mix all the ingredients well in a bowl. (Don't be tempted to add water--just keep mixing to get the cake mix incorporated into the pumpkin. It should look like a big bowl of canned pumpkin when you're done.)

Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet(s). Cook at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

This made 4 dozen cookies, perfect for a quick cookie fix or Family Home Evening treat. :)

NEW pet, countertops, and skillzzz

Thanks to Jason's home teaching companion, Brother Maxwell, we took the plunge and welcomed a new family member yesterday:

Introducing: Toby the Baby Tortoise
Age: Unknown
Gender: Unknown
Expected lifetime: Unknown, but could outlive us
Found: in Brother Maxwell's yard. One of their 4 larger desert tortoises had babies, and so far Toby is the only one they've seen.
Alias: Shelley (if it ends up being a girl)
Favorite food: Romaine lettuce
Least favorite food: spinach (we're hoping that will change)
Interesting fact: Toby will live indoors and likely stay very, very small for the next seven YEARS, then he'll be able to transition out of the plastic home he's in now to spending most of his time outdoors.
Kids' reaction: In heaven.
Parents' reaction: Happy. I find myself admiring how cute he is. Jason made a custom water dish for Toby out of a film canister cap.

While we were out shopping for a few things for Toby's home, Wade said, "Mom, we should have asked Dad to keep an eye on Toby while we're gone." I assured him that Toby wasn't going anywhere and would be okay. Rhiannon has been the most comfortable with Toby so far as he crept all over her hands. Before bed she said, "I am SO HAPPY to have a pet." I'm confident that Toby is going to be the perfect first pet.

The new countertops are (mostly) done, and they are stunning. I'm in love! We got a new sink, faucet, garbage disposal, and cool granite cutting board, too. What's left to do: granite piece for the small section up against the window, some touch-up painting, and (hopefully) something done to fix the strange hard-water-stain appearance on the countertops. From certain views they look dirty--we're not sure if that's a mistake that happened during the installation, or if that's normal.

The kids have one more day of swim lessons. Both Rhiannon and Wade have done really, really well. Our neighbor Keagan made me laugh when she asked me why I didn't just teach the kids how to swim in our pool. I tried to explain to her that it made a difference for the kids having teachers who actually knew what they were doing. :) They've had "private" lessons the last couple years, so it's been good for them to be in a class environment. I think they work harder because other people are watching them, too.

I (heart) libraries

This post is for my friend Linden. Her town's library got shut down. Apparently some very un-informed voters figured libraries weren't needed much nowadays because of things like the Internet and Kindles...it's crazy. There's nothing like a book in your hands, ya know?

Here's a great video--enjoy. (Oh, and you can view the original Old Spice commercial below to really appreciate the parody, in case you haven't seen it.)

Kitchen demo, before and after

No, I don't have pictures of the new countertops yet--they're coming on Thursday. But I wanted to show some before and after pics of the kitchen demolition that our awesome contractor did today. He and one other guy completed the job in less than 6 hours and did a fantastic clean-up job, too. I thought I was going to have a big headache to deal with afterwards, but I caught them sweeping out my cabinets and drawers, bless them!

I wish I'd taken a picture of the mess while they were making it, but I didn't want to bother them. You can imagine what it was like easy enough, I guess. The old tile countertops are long gone--I didn't want a souvenir piece, either!

Can't wait til Friday--we'll get the end result in pictures for you then!

"Can I have a sunbutter and honey sandwich?"

When we learned about Wade's peanut allergy, I gulped down the disappointment. No more Reese's. No more mountain bar cookies. No more Sunday "Easy Peanut Butter Treats." The list went on and on, but you do what you've got to do (or do without) to keep your kids safe!

About a year ago, I picked up a very expensive bottle of "sunbutter spread," made from sunflower seeds, at our local whole foods store. It was okay. A few months went by, and then I saw a jar of SunButter at Albertsons. Still ridiculously expensive, but less than I'd paid before. No, it doesn't taste exactly like peanut butter, but it's a VERY good substitute, especially if it's smothered with honey (Rhiannon's favorite) or Aunt Amelia's peach jam (my favorite). Rhiannon has been enjoying SunButter so much lately that I'm considering saving a few bucks and buying the company's 5-pound bucket of the stuff online!

This month Wade finally ate a sandwich with it. He was surprised that it tasted so good. His built-in peanut radar is so strong and he didn't want to TOUCH the sunbutter because it looked exactly like peanut butter! I don't know if he'll ever LOVE it the way Rhiannon does, but I was happy to see him overcome his fear of it. :)

Here's the company's website--I was looking at it today, and it is LOADED with recipes. Maybe I'll make a batch of Easy SunButter Treats one of these days--ha, ha! :)

Wade lost his first tooth!

It's a little hard to see because there's already a new tooth moved in behind where the lost one came out! :)

Baggy with his tooth in it

Saturday was a happy day for Wade-O! He really struggled watching so many kids in his kindergarten class lose their teeth, while he didn't have any action going on , nothing loose, nothing moving, nada, zilch. Mom finally pulled it out (gently, of course) because the thing was hanging by a THREAD. Wade was surprised that it didn't hurt and that there wasn't much blood, but he had a lot of support to help him get through it. I wish I'd taken a picture of him, Rhiannon, and me all crowded by the bathroom sink together. :) Reminded me of a certain experience my dad had recently on Brant and Chris's living room couch. Ha-ha!

We also went to a new dentist on Monday. No cavities for the kids--hurray! I've got an old filling that needs replaced, but otherwise had good teeth.

An anniversary of sorts

Last week we had an anniversary of sorts--our first year back in Ridgecrest. Back in DC we felt compelled to go/do/see constantly; here in the desert, it's the exact opposite. Now an exciting weekend might be driving down to Lancaster to do some shopping, having friends over to swim/bbq, or doing yet another yard project. And the funny thing is, that's okay! It's a slower pace, and after two previous years of glorious packed-in adventure craziness, the slower pace must be welcome because we're not complaining about it!

Not to say this past year hasn't been exciting, though. Here's my perspective on what we've "packed in" since last July:

--caught up with old friends, and made lots of new ones
--new home, new ward, new school, new job responsibilities for Jason
--furniture, furniture, and more furniture
--sold 706 Randall house and bought 908 on the same day!!!
--for Jason and me, new callings as Young Men president and Primary president
--t-ball, tennis, swim lessons
--Texas for Christmas and Tom and Lyd's wedding
--Utah for Spring Break
--planted our first garden since 2006 (it's not doing too well, but that's okay! ;))
--truly enjoying our swimming pool
--allergy shots and surgery for Wade-O
--hosting quite a few gatherings at our house
--reading, reading, and more reading
--enjoying visits from Brant, Grandpa Rod and Grandma Deb, and Derrick, Traci, and Max!
--for Rhiannon and Wade, excelling in 4th grade and kindergarten
--for Jason, lots of hiking and camping with Scouts
--for me, getting used to a bigger house and enjoying volunteering at the kids' school
--signing up for Netflix (this is sort of revolutionary for us)
--lots of family work parties outside (the yard may look maintenance-free, but it's not!) :)
--new storage room built/finished above the garage--LOVE it
--new fridge, new bbq, new patio chairs, solar lights around the pool, etc, etc, etc
--enjoying the little things, like eating grapes from our backyard and watching hummingbirds
Those are just a few things that come to mind. Every day or week brings something new, to either tackle or look forward to. This coming week is a good example--we'll finish up swim lessons, get new countertops in the kitchen, and (hopefully) get the washer repaired. There's always something going on! :)

Good movie!

Watched this with the kids tonight--it was surprisingly good! I think we'll count it for our Family Home Evening--it had plenty of good lessons to it!

Today we spent over 3 hours in the pool with some friends. The kids got along great with eachother and I caught up with my good friend Judith.

I think we did some work here and there, got groceries, and just tried to stay cool! It's HOT out there!!!

Girl power!

I've been looking through more Texas trip pics taken by other family members. This one is a favorite of mine--Sheen girls need to stick together with all those boys running around! :) We're missing some lovely ladies in this picture--Amelia, Traci, Lydia, baby Olivia, Derrick and Traci's baby-on-the-way. Hopefully sooner than later we can get one of all of us girls!

Walking commentary

Today was the last day of Rhiannon's substitute paper route--probably a good thing because we were both groggy and tired. Last night we prepped Wade for it, telling him we needed him to come with us so he wouldn't be in the house by himself (Dad was gone on a Scout campout). He must have a very efficient internal alarm clock--at 4:45am his door slammed. When I went down the hallway to check on him, he was fully dressed and said he needed to eat breakfast before we went on our walk! Luckily I managed to get him to go back to sleep for another hour!

All loaded up and ready to go--she was sure a trooper about this! Saturday's papers were the heaviest and hardest to fold for her.

"Rocky" pose--We are the champions!

So Wade walked along with me and gave what felt like a very loud running commentary the whole time. Here were some of my favorites, keep in mind this is pretty early in the morning for a Saturday:

At the 4th house, right up next to the doorway: (loudly) "EW! EWWW! THAT COCKROACH IS MOVING!"

5th house, and my personal favorite: "Huh, that doormat says 'Beware of Cat.' They must have a cat with really sharp claws." (ha-ha-ha-ha!)

Halfway into it: "I'm doing okay, but my legs are kind of tired."

Starting the countdown on the last 7 houses on our side of the street: "Is this the next house?" (me--"No.") Doh! Is this the next house? (me--"No.") DOH!"

When he wasn't making funny comments on the walk, he was reading parts of the newspaper out loud to me or asking questions about it:

"Why is there a picture of a kid eating an ice cream cone on the front cover?"

I feel kind of bad keeping all that bubbly, wide-awake humor to myself--I should have had him walk with Rhiannon on her side of the street, but she probably would have been more annoyed than amused. :)

Gotta earn your keep!

Our family dinner conversations are usually pretty short and simple. Dad finds out what everyone did that day, and we find out if his day was good, bad, or in-between. Sometimes the discussion is a little more lively and memorable, though...

About a week ago:

Mom: Rhiannon is doing a good job with this substitute paper route. She's getting up when she needs to and being responsible.

(Rhiannon shares how much she'll earn for this little project, how much money she already has, etc.)

Dad: Well, Rhiannon, now that you've got a job you can start earning your keep around here. Your rent of $450 for room and board is due the first of August, with a five-day grace period.

(kids look at me, I try to stay stone-faced)

Wade: He's joking, right, Mom?

Dad to Wade: How much money are you making?

Wade: $6 a month

Dad: Hmmm...well, you'd better start finding other ways to earn money to get the $450 paid off then!

I don't think Rhiannon bought it, but Wade is still unsure. Sometimes he'd ask me if Dad was serious about the $450. I forgot about it until this morning when we went outside to help Jason do clean-up in the front yard.

Wade came outside quickly. He said, "I'm going to work, work, work so that I can get that $450!"

4th of July!

Living in Ridgecrest has its disadvantages, but it also has strengths. Patriotism is alive and well here in the California desert! Our weekend was nice and low-key, but signs of Independence Day were everywhere. It was great to see fireworks stands and American flags out all over the place, listen to firecrackers and pops all over the neighborhood, and enjoy a very patriotic-themed Sunday of church meetings.

At 7:00am on Monday we went up to the church grounds for the annual flag-raising. I have to agree with a friend of mine who said the 4th of July wouldn't feel complete without this tradition! There was a band made up of members from all the different wards, a talk from a Vietnam veteran, lots of singing, and a delicious bagel/fruit breakfast afterwards. Good times!

It's a grand ol' flag!

You can't tell from this picture, but there was a great turnout.

4th of July Band!

Wade, Rhiannon, and our friend Danielle enjoy some tasty bagels!

Yes, I was lazy and decided to just sit back and enjoy Jason's fireworks show in the street instead of madly taking pictures. I managed to get a picture of the carnage left afterwards, though! :) Thanks, Daddy, for a very fun display!

Monday night we invited Howard and Sandi over for swimming and a barbecue. Man, it was fun! The food, swimming, and conversation were GREAT!!!

Cast your vote!

We went on a fun family field trip today to Bakersfield and went shopping for granite countertops! Woo-hoo! Here were our top 3 favorites, in no particular order:

Typhoon Bordeaux

Tropic Brown

Juperana Light

Which do you like best? Picture it with our mostly all-white kitchen, except for the black cooktop. Let the voting begin!
