January 2014, according to Mommy's new iPhone

I've told Jason multiple times since December 25 how much I love my new iPhone.  It's pretty spectacular--I'm always finding out a new way to use it to make my life better, brighter, and more fun.

Today I realized I had quite a few pictures on it, lovely random photos that give you a good idea of a typical day around the Cushing home in January.  About the only thing I'm missing is a good flag football shot of Wade.  His season ends this weekend, so I'd better get on that.

Without further ado, here are some glimpses into this month--enjoy!  I know I sure did!

Playing with our new pool table--just the right size! :)

Wade participated in the district spelling bee last week.  There were less than 10 kids competing around Ridgecrest.  Wade was the second kid out, on the word "affinity," and he was pretty upset by that, but I hope he knows how proud we are of him!  Our neighbor and friend, Saad, took 2nd place after almost 30 rounds.

Carpool fun with Rhiannon--love her!  We laugh so much together!

Selfie much?  :)  So funny!

Rhiannon rocks a new dress, Wade sports a mustache for school, catching the dogs and kids candidly

Proof that we did celebrate birthdays this month!  The cinnamon cake was HEAVENLY!

Volleyball camp for Rhiannon--she loved it!

Science fair, working on Blue & Gold, proof that my new vacuum works, and a fun new board game

Panoramic sunset in Ridgecrest--lovely!

And then the flu hits.

Last week was a blur, an eat-lots-of-soup, get-lots-of-rest, and don't-leave-the-house-if-you-can-help-it kind of blur!

Wade started with a fever two days before Jason's birthday--the fever lasted 2 days over the weekend, and then we kept him home from school one day.  He has a little cough now but recovered remarkably quickly.

Jason and I, well, not so quickly.  We both had fever for a couple days, ZERO energy for a week, and now we're dealing with coughs, but at least we have energy mostly back!

Blessedly, Rhiannon has been unscathed, so far.  It's all over Ridgecrest and not showing a slow-down yet.

Jason sure knows how to celebrate a birthday

It's safe to say that Jason has spent his 39th birthday exactly how he'd like to, down to every detail!  Thankfully Wade has been feeling a little better today (we think he came down with the flu) and was able to celebrate with us.

Today we slept in.

We had blueberry muffins and Little Smokies for breakfast.

Jason took Rhiannon with him to the dump to throw out a big pile of stuff--old carpet, old shelving, and a deceased vacuum.

Jason and I ran some errands--grocery shopping, Home Depot to start the process for new carpet in the guest bedroom, and a quick stop by a thrift store to find an old cooking pot.

Lunch at Pizza Factory with the whole family--YUM!

Rhiannon headed to her friend JenAi's birthday party.

Jason and I headed out again and went to Lindsay's Furniture store to shop for mattresses.  We got a Tempur-Pedic one that will arrive in a month or so.  This was a purchase we'd been waiting a year to make (due to furloughs)--we are EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jason grilled up some divine, best-we've-ever-had steaks for his birthday dinner, and I filled in the rest with baked potatoes with fixin's, salad, blueberries, and steamed broccoli.  Man, it was all so good!

Now Jason and Wade are playing some Tiger Woods golf and then we'll have some birthday cake in a few minutes--a cinnamon bundt cake that actually turned out--HURRAY! :)

Happy Birthday to Jason--one amazing, wise, funny, strong, hard-working, kind, patient, and surprising man--we love him so much!

Thoughtful people make the world go 'round

Yesterday some thoughtful people made me very happy.

One friend came by in the morning with some divine cookies, STILL WARM, and visited with me for a bit.  She wanted to thank me for pointing out an article in the January 2014 Ensign called "The Healing Power of Grief" to another friend, who quickly called her and told her about it.  My friend's visit was unexpected--I hadn't showered and had just come inside from washing windows, I was in my old red sweatshirt, purple leggings and brown shorts (I know, I know, tacky!)--but, boy, was her visit wonderful!  We had a very real conversation, beyond those "How are you?" ones.  My friend had been gone for a few months taking care of her sister, who died after a battle of cancer just a few weeks ago.  It meant a lot to me that she would take that time to stop by, especially when she's dealing with her own sadness and grief.

Shortly after that friend left, I got a call from Wade's school asking me to please, please come in and sub for a teacher who'd gone home sick in the morning.  I'm thankful for thoughtful friends who were willing to change plans and pick up Rhiannon for me from school, especially since it was my turn to carpool that day!

Then there was my handsome, hard-working hubby, Jason, who kindly drove Rhiannon and her friend down and back to the stake center for a dance activity.  I was at Cub Scouts with Wade, and it helped a lot to have Jason do that.  It's the little things that mean a lot!

Then another friend called during the day and invited me to join her next Friday for a temple trip.  She has to go down to LA anyways to pick up a friend from the airport, but she figured she'd carve some time out to do a temple session, too.  She remembered me mentioning to her that I had a goal to attend the temple more this year, and so she called me up to see if I'd like to go with her.  I really appreciated that!

Then there was our daughter Rhiannon who sent me upbeat texts, got dinner started while I was driving Wade to flag football, and just all-around makes me happy with the sunlight she spreads around her!

Then there was Wade, who put the icing on a busy, happy day when he said he wished that our Webelos den meeting had been longer last night!  Cool!

So, cheers to thoughtful people who make my life easier, brighter, and happier!  Happy Friday!

Some big "firsts" today

It's been a happy, busy Saturday!

Jason and I got our P90X3 workouts in.

I took the dogs for a good walk.

Wade (with a little help from Mom) got his science project board completed.

We went to Game Stop and cashed in a gift card from the Round Rock Sheens (thanks, guys!!!!!!!!!!!)!

Rhiannon had a blast at her second-to-last volleyball clinic class.  She said they worked on a lot of defensive moves today.  She'll be sad when the class ends next week and asked me if we could get a volleyball so she could practice some of the things she's learned in the backyard.  :)  I love that she's having a good time with it.  Besides tennis and swim lessons and one season of soccer, she hasn't tried anything else "sporty".  She said she could definitely see herself wanting to do volleyball again--here in town they offer this particular clinic to kids all the way up to age 19--yay!

Wade scored his first-ever touchdown in his team's flag football game this afternoon.  It was a pretty exciting moment, the first time he's done that since he started playing flag football a few years ago.  We'd never seen him run that fast, ha-ha!  We asked him how he felt when he got the ball in his hands, and he said, "I felt like I was on steroids!"  Adrenal kicked in and got him to the goal line!

And then tonight the kids joined me in the kitchen for their first official "Cooking with Mom" lesson of the year.  Last year I failed in my goal to teach them 12 meals.  This year I said we'd do 6, and we got off to a great start tonight.  For the first time ever, both kids cut up raw chicken (and survived).  They read the recipe, got all the ingredients prepped, and then made the meal with very little help from me.  They learned 3 cooking tips:  be safe, be clean, and always get your ingredients together before you start (so that you know you have everything!)  It was cool, and the "Angel Hair Pasta with Chicken, Broccoli, and Carrots" was tasty!  Good job, kids!

For their reward, I told them I'd take care of kitchen clean-up for the night.

Which is why I'm procrastinating and blogging right now, HA! :)

Happy Saturday!

A busy birthday

I used to get upset about busy birthdays.  I thought, "Hey, I was BORN today!  Isn't the world supposed to revolve around ME today?"  :)

But then I became enlightened and realized that busy-day birthdays meant I had a legitimate excuse to stretch the birthday celebrating out! :)

So that's what we're doing today and tomorrow for my 38th birthday, because today, on my actual birthday, our schedule looks like this:

3:00     Carpool pick-up
3:30     Piano lessons
4:15     Mom meet with a family to talk about Webelos
4:30     Piano lessons end, Wade walks home and Rhiannon walks to Littons' house for another piano practice
5:00    Quick dinner,  probably in shifts
5:30     Flag football for Wade
7:00    Mutual for Rhiannon; Webelos for Wade and me
8:15    Cub Scout Committee meeting for me

So...tomorrow I hope to get a lunch date with Jason and a birthday dinner somewhere! :)  It's ALLLL good! :)

Update:  I had a FANTASTIC 38th birthday!  Lunch with my friend Heidi, dinner with Jason and the kids at Red Bowl restaurant, and a new Dyson vacuum!  Woo-hoo!  Thanks for all the calls, texts, messages, gifts, and love!

Recuperation

Well, shortly after I posted the last post I came down with a quick stomach bug.  I felt bad enough that I canceled all my appointments for the day.

I took a shower. I ate saltine crackers and a banana. And I got lots of rest.

I'm feeling a little better, well enough to dictate this blog post with my iPhone. :-)

Technology is fun.  And it is definitely a blessing on sick days.

Tell me how you really feel

The topic of baseball came up at our goal-setting Family Home Evening last night.  We told Wade that we'd support him in what he'd like to do athletically, that it was important to "do a sport" for many reasons, to learn skills, get exercise, make friends, and get away from electronics, ha-ha!  I enthusiastically encouraged Wade to try a golf clinic or basketball or soccer, sports he hadn't played with an organized team yet.  Jason gave Wade some wise counsel and told him that if he took a year off from baseball, he probably would never come back to it, and most importantly, to not let the last season keep him from signing up for baseball if he wanted to.

Ah, last season.  I've spent 7 months trying to forget about it, but I woke up at 4:30 this morning from a very vivid dream about it.  In the dream I was in a car with Jason and our home teacher Brother Robins and a couple other people, tearfully describing, in great detail, the "character-building" that Wade experienced with the Mustang Tigers.  I couldn't go back to sleep and decided to come down and type it out.

So, here's a pull-the-skeleton-out-of-the-closet, let's-get-real post, in letter format:

To whom it may concern, members of the Mustang division, the IWVYB league, and parents and Ridgecrest baseball coaches in general,

After 4 previous seasons of baseball, our son got his chance to build character in the 2013 spring season as a first-year Mustang.  His team finished with an 0-13 record and mercifully ended the playoffs early.  Despite the difficult season, our family appreciates the time, sacrifice, and efforts of his three coaches, who took time away from their own families and pursuits to coach.

One of the biggest set-backs for our team, in my opinion, was the unchecked egos and bad attitudes of several players on our team.  A valuable lesson--there is no "I" in T.E.A.M (together everyone achieves more)--was not learned. Early in the season one coach thought it would be a good idea to have our son start preparing to be a back-up pitcher.  We were quietly excited about this, but we admitted that he had very little experience except to be pulled from the outfield to pitch in an emergency, nail-biting situation at his Pinto team's final championship game the year before.  (He'd done well with that, too!)  You can imagine how our son must have felt, anticipating a chance to actually play something other than an outfield position, when other "more experienced" boys on his team put up a fuss to the coaches and didn't think that was a good idea for him to pitch.  Our son spent the rest of the SEASON obediently playing in the outfield after that night.

Our team had a lot of talent, full of good baseball players.  But game after game, we'd watch the team implode.  It was a cycle:

1.  The team would start out playing hard, excited, and they'd get ahead.
2.  Someone on the team would make a mistake.
3.  "More experienced" players would start in with bad-mouthing, cut-downs, tantrums, and the like.
4.  The team would implode.
5.  We'd lose the game.

We're proud of our son, though.  He never quit, he showed up for practices and games, he was respectful to his coaches, and he played his best and kept his head high at center field.  He also kept his mouth shut in the dugout and on the field.  But he admitted to getting a sick feeling in his stomach before every baseball outing, and tears were shed after many of them, on the way home in the van.

So, you can imagine how I felt to talk about baseball again.

At this moment, I don't know if our son will want to sign-up.  We've given him a couple weeks to think about it and decide before the final sign-ups deadline later this month.  We'll support him either way.  I know we're probably one of those families that coaches would rather avoid, the kind that digs out the baseball gear just before a season starts and hangs it up at the end, who declines summer ABL invitations to be an "alternate,"the family who doesn't spend weekends and nights at the baseball field, and who, heaven forbid, signs their kid up for baseball so he can have fun and learn how to play, not to groom him to be the high school/college star or the next J.D. Martin.

I get that baseball is the "other" religion in Ridgecrest.  But I'd love to see a different kind of baseball played, especially with these young kids, where parents' and coaches' and kids' visions of grandeur, profanity, and egos are checked at the door.  A type of baseball where kids are rotated through positions more and not groomed for the in-field, where they're allowed to have fun, make mistakes, and learn to love baseball.

Sincerely,
a somewhat disgruntled parent

Trying something new

Well, we all hit the ground running this morning.  Jason and Rhiannon were gone to work and school before 6:10am, and Wade headed to school at 8:30am with our friends Heidi and Halle Evans.

Inspired by my husband, I started P90X3 this morning, 90 days of 30-minute daily DVD workouts with one rest day a week.  I love that they're only 30 minutes!  I did okay today for my current activity level, ha-ha! :)  For every 1-minute circuit, I was able to do 30 seconds of it or so, and I skipped the donkey kicks.  Sure, I'd like to be able to get to that point and do a for-realz donkey kick, but I can see why it's the last one on that workout DVD, too.  YIKES.  I was aware of myself and my surroundings and knew that if I tried anything that looked even close to what they were doing on that one, I'd crack my skull open and/or throw my back out permanently. :)  NO thanks!

Tonight we're going to sit down and talk about family and personal goals for 2014.  Can't wait! :)

Keeping busy on a Fast Sunday morning when you've got afternoon church

Am I still harping on switching to afternoons for church on Sundays? :)  Well, we're trying to keep busy this morning with good things before church starts at 1:00pm.

Dogs walked.

Lunches for school are made.  (It helps us a LOT to have them made ahead of time.)

Personal Progress discussion with Rhiannon done.

Webelos discussion with Wade done.

Lots of beautiful piano music being played.

Showers taken.

Samson had a bath, too.  (He smelled really, really bad!  Now he doesn't. :))

Dishwasher emptied and filled.

Quick vacuum job downstairs.

Jason did some work on the guest bedroom.

Rhiannon and I practiced a demonstration we're doing for part of a lesson at church today given by our bishop.  We're talking about sharing the gospel with others and how we've been blessed by the priesthood.

A little reminder made that we'll be talking about 2014 goals tomorrow night.

Blog post typed, ha-ha! :)

Hopefully every Sunday will feel this peaceful and productive!

Final Saturday Before Reality Hits

We've had a good weekend!  Yesterday Jason treated us to a movie (Secret Life of Walter Mitty--GOOD) and dinner at Ale's (pronounced Allie's?) Steakhouse which had some tasty shoestring fries, burgers, chicken, and steak.  Yum!

Then this morning Jason took Wade with him to the China Lake golf course where they joined up with a friend, Zach Bell, for a round of golf.  Wish I could have seen Wade "driving" the golf cart.  He said he "took corners a little too fast."  Ha-ha!  :)

Rhiannon and I enjoyed some "girl time" and made a shopping trip or two around town.  She found 2 gorgeous dresses.  We had a great time--she is so patient with me and a lot of fun to be with!

We've been watching a TON of football, lots of college bowl games and then NFL tonight.  I usually can't make it to the end of games, but I've had fun watching a good chunk of it with Jason.  :)

Pretty much the only unhappy thing this weekend has been catching Samson, our little black dog, getting into Jason's Christmas stash of CHOCOLATE goodies upstairs TWICE.  Both bags were ON HIS DESK in the office, meaning the little stinker figured out how to jump into a chair and then onto the desk to get the treats.  To say I gave him the cold shoulder most of last night and today is a MAJOR understatement.  I was ready to take him back to the animal shelter, dang dog!!!!

We're sad to start the afternoon schedule of church tomorrow for....a....whole....year.  We share our building with another church congregation and switch off schedules every year.  I know, I know, cry me a river.  I'm sure we'll find a silver lining eventually, but we prefer morning church!  I'm going to really miss my Sunday afternoon naps. :)

After that, Monday hits and it's back to reality!  We've had such an amazing 2-week vacation, full of fun and relaxation!

1000 things

A friend of mine mentioned on Facebook that she was going to try to make a list of 1000 things she's grateful for this year.  She and her husband had been inspired by the book One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp.

That's about 3 things a day.

This is a bandwagon I think I could jump on.  Being grateful for the little (and big) things in life gives me perspective and makes me really happy.  Life isn't easy, but there are so many things to be thankful for!

I started a list on my iPhone today and it included things like:

#1:  Jason, Rhiannon, and Wade
#3:  small opportunities to serve others  (we brought a meal into a family last night, and I'm making funeral potatoes for a funeral luncheon today)
#4:  a peaceful, 2-mile walk with the dogs
#8:  Jason taking two weeks off of work to be with us
#15:  bananas
#18:  realizing that I did lose a little weight (8 lbs) in 2013
#19:  caller ID

What are you thankful for?

Ready for 2014!

Rhiannon has been recovering from a nasty cold, so we decided to stay at home on New Year's Eve.  Jason worked some more on the guest bedroom re-do during the day, and we had a fun, laid-back kind of night:

Tacos for dinner
nail-biter A&M/Duke football game
Man of Steel on Blu-ray
Fire roaring in the fireplace
Snacking on Christmas treats!

Around 11:00pm we said good night and went up to our own rooms.  I was starting to doze off when Wade came in after midnight and said, "Well, Happy New Year!"  We got a good laugh out of that!

On New Year's Day Jason played in a golf tournament and the kids and I took down all the Christmas decorations around the house.  That was quite a good work-out for me--I cleaned out everything and ended up with a bag of trash and a bag to donate, and everything Christmas is stacked, organized, and labeled. Yay!

We've got 4 more days of glorious vacation before reality hits on Monday.  We'll also set some new family and personal goals for 2014 on Monday night.  I've got lots of ideas spinning in my head!

A wonderful Christmas up in Salt Lake City!

We are having a fantastic Christmas/New Years' break.  Jason has taken off work for the whole two weeks, and the kids are out of school.  We're lovin' it!

We drove up to Salt Lake City on Friday, December 20th and had a fantastic Christmas with the Cushings and Croppers.  It made me feel good when Grandma Deb said she couldn't remember so much family time before on a CA Cushing visit!  Here were some highlights:

Dec 20th--eating at Peggy's Diner in Mesquite, NV where we stayed the night; not having too much traffic was a major bonus.

Dec 21st--getting to Salt Lake City safely even with some snow, and having fun at the Throndsen Family Christmas party.  The Minute-To-Win-It games were a BIG hit!

Dec 22nd--Church in Murray at the Croppers' ward--we loved seeing their choir perform something Uncle Matt had put together, and loved watching Sam, Tyler, and Lilly sing with the Primary.  First of many family dinner/game nights that night, too!  (Thanks, Grandma Deb and Grandpa Rod, for hosting all of those! :))  Rhiannon and Wade got in the backyard and played in the snow for a little bit, also.

Dec 23rd--Family service project making a meal at the Ronald McDonald House in Salt Lake City.  This was a wonderful experience; even the kids had fun!  I appreciated the tour that the director gave us after we'd cleaned up the kitchen.  They're doing a big addition on the building and will go from 30+ rooms to close to 80.  Yeah, I got a little emotional thinking of the blessing this place was for us down in Loma Linda when Rhiannon was born!  Also did some stocking stuffer shopping with Rhiannon--SO FUN!

At the Salt Lake City Ronald McDonald House.  We brought food in and made almost 50 sack lunches!

Dec 24th--Jason took me and the kids to see The Hobbit, Desolation of Smaug that day; we enjoyed a TASTY Christmas Eve dinner and present-opening with Brett and Jaymie's family and Grandpa Rod and Grandma Deb!  Next-door neighbor Mrs. Hammond also surprised Rhiannon and Wade that day with some handmade Minion hats--adorable!

Dec 25th--Christmas Day!  Jason S-P-O-I-L-E-D Rhiannon and me with new iPhones!!!!!!!!  Wade was pretty understanding that he didn't get one, especially since he got spoiled on his own with lots of Lego sets and video games!   I spent a lot of time Facetiming with my mom and dad and brothers that day!  That was a really fun day, a full house with all of Rod and Deb's kids' families plus Aunt Rochelle, Great-Grandpa Rod, Shaunae, and Nick!  Great food, fun present opening, and more games!  Other highlights:  Seeing Jason open up his hot sauce Man Crate, watching 4-yr-old Lilly open her Lego Friends gift, and seeing Grandma open a Kindle Fire from Grandpa Rod (I got pretty excited about that one!)

Dec 26th--Shopping at a mall in the morning with Grandma Deb, McKaleigh, Rhiannon, Wade, and me.  Fun!!!  That afternoon Grandma Deb treated all of us girls to Ballet West's Nutcracker Ballet in Salt Lake City.  It was the first time Rhiannon and I had ever experienced a ballet--it was wonderful!   Grandpa Rod took all the boys, young and older, bowling while we were gone--they had a blast, too!

I love this picture of Rhiannon and me!

Photo bomb by Wade-O! :)

The ladies at the Nutcracker ballet--what a blast!

Dec 27th--a quiet  day, full of laundry, packing, and time with the Cropper cousins!

Dec 28th--Family Picture Day at the state capitol building.  Family pictures aren't a lot of fun for the CA Cushings, but Aunt Heather made this a pretty painless experience.  I CANNOT WAIT to see how the pictures turned out!!!  Grandpa Rod sprung for lunch at Crown Burger for the whole group afterwards--thank you!  Also had one more family dinner/games with the Croppers that night!

At the state capitol building--I can't wait to see how our pics turned out!

Dec 29th--back to Ridgecrest!  The roads were clear! We made outstanding time, even with some traffic from Vegas to Baker, and got home around 3:00pm.  The dogs were thrilled to see us, and we were happy that Connor had taken such good care of them!

We're thankful and happy we could make the trip up to Salt Lake and have so much time with family!  We love you all!
