Walking in Grandma's shoes

So I messed up and accidentally deleted the pictures I took of Rhiannon at her two-week-long, 7:00am tennis class earlier this month. She had a great time, and we were happy to go support her. She has a few classes of tennis under her belt, and this was the first time they went beyond practicing basic tennis moves and actually tried to play a few games. Granted, volleys were few and far between, but she was excited about the quicker pace of the class. If she's interested next summer, we'll sign her up for more than one session. Coach Yoko is fantastic, and I liked that the class size wasn't huge.

Rhiannon will also get to walk in Grandma Donna's shoes for the next week and a half--she's taking over a newspaper route for someone on vacation. It's a walking route right in our neighborhood. The papers have to be delivered by 6:30am; but (wait for it) this won't be too hard because she only has to deliver..............35 papers. She'll earn $4 each day, unless she gets complaints from customers (which hurt at $1 each). This morning she and I woke up and went with the 11-year-old boy who does the route to see what it was like. We were out the door by 5:35am and finished at 6:15am. We were alert and had energy to burn after we got home, so we pulled weeds in the backyard and basically had all our chores done for the day by 8am. Pretty cool!

Speaking of cool, I have learned a new, critical skill--how to wrap up an extension cord correctly. This has been a long road for me. I was actually grounded from using yard equipment that required the use of said cord for a while, because the crazy figure 8 knot I created took longer for Jason to untangle than it did to actually do the job he needed it for.... Want to know how I figured it out? I got on Google and typed "how to wrap an extension cord correctly." The trick for me is to put a paint bucket on the ground and wrap the cord around the outside of the bucket. When I'm done, I just lift the bucket up and voila!!!, a perfectly coiled extension cord! Miracles happen!

Stopping the rambling now...gotta get to bed so I don't miss the early paper route wake-up call. :)

Congrats, Tom and Lyd!

We got back yesterday from our trip to Texas. I think it's safe to say that a good, good time was had by all, and Tommy and Lydia's wedding was great! We are so happy for them and wish them all the best in married life. :) Many thanks also to Lydia's parents, Paul and Rosemary, who were so kind and made us feel welcome in their beautiful home.

I must have been too busy relaxing and enjoying myself with family because I took ZERO pictures of all the fun we had over at Brant and Chris's home in Sachse. We are very thankful to the Sachse Sheens for their generous hospitality--we got plenty of swimming, eating, visiting, and movie-watching in. It was awesome!!! Jordan, Amelia, and their boys were missed--it will be great having us all together about this time next summer for the "1st Annual Rich and Donna Sheen and Family Reunion" in Dallas!

Howdy, ya'll! We're heading to Texas tomorrow for Tommy and Lydia's wedding, and we are EXCITED!!!

Happy Father's Day!

Just a quick shout-out to all the special men in our family's lives today. We're so grateful for awesome grandpas, uncles, friends, hometeachers, and church leaders who take care of us!

I hope the Daddy in our home knows how much we love him. We kept the day simple with some fun cards, a tie key-chain, and good food. Wade was the first one up this morning and came in to say "Happy Father's Day, Dad!" We also made him a breakfast menu that he could choose items from-that was fun.

Why we love our dad:

Wade: "He does fun stuff with me. He wrestles with me! He's 6 feet tall! He helps me with my Transformers toys."

Rhiannon: "He's WAY funny! He works hard for us. He's fun to swim with in the pool. He's AWESOME!"

Mom: "He's handsome! He's not lazy! He expects a lot from us and keeps us on our toes! He spoils us rotten!"

Last night Jason and I had an in-house date night and watched Invictus while the kids hung out together upstairs (they probably could have watched it with us, but I didn't know if the language would be okay or not.) Good flick. The best part of the "date" for me, though, was when Jason and I snuck upstairs really really quietly and scared the pants off the kids! SO FUN!!!!!!! :)

Love you, babe! Happy Father's Day!!!

Fruity fun

Tonight we snacked on some apricots from a little tree in our backyard. There's not enough fruit to do much with except eat straight, but it is so fun to do that! We were surprised to see grapes growing on the grapevine again, too. Lots to learn and experiment with, as far as gardening goes. We love it!

Top 5

Top 5 things that made today a fun day:

1. Vacuum attachment for pool. Every single time we get wind, the pool gets d-i-r-t-y. But the nifty vacuum attachment for the Polaris makes clean-up a snap, as long as the filter isn't clogged. I LOVE it! We couldn't help ourselves and jumped in for an hour after we did more yard work and pool clean-up.

2. Book of Mormon reading, and lots of it.

3. Finally tackled 72 hour kit; will finish updating it tomorrow. Good thing I got it out--the kids' clothes definitely needed changed out, among other things.

4. Trip to the library

5. Spontaneous "late-night" trip to WalMart for supplies (see #3). I know getting out of there by 9:30pm isn't late for most people, but we felt like we were doing something crazy and fun!

Monday Report... and Yet Another Reason Why I Love My Husband

7:15am--Rhiannon started her tennis class; two weeks of getting up early, but I think she enjoys it! Wade and I kill time by kicking the soccer ball around for an hour.

8:30-10am--Rhiannon, Wade, and Mom hit the front yard hard and bag a bunch of plant debris

10-11ish am--Our neighbors come by to say hi just as we're finishing outside. We're hot and sweaty and heading to the pool, so we invite them to join us.

11:30am--older neighbor across the street needs some computer/DVD player help. I say my husband might be able to help in the evening...

1-2:30pm--Kids are good sports about waiting so long at my doctor's appointment. Had my thyroid levels checked a few days ago and found out they're low. Doctor doubles my Synthroid amount and also says I should take over-the-counter vitamin D--those levels were low, too.

2:30-3:15pm--WalGreens, Home Depot, Baskin Robbins
(not the greatest idea as the temperature readings around town range from 108 to 116 degrees...but we were already out anyways)

3:15-4:oopm--R, W, and Ma fold mountains of laundry

4:00pm-?--general messing around until Daddy gets home

4:30--Dad runs on the treadmill, then hops in the hot tub

6:30pm--Dinner (chicken primavera). Mom casually mentions older neighbor who needs help.

7ish pm--Jason, who still needs to pack for early-morning flight the following day, put gas in car, and do several other things on top of the crazy busy day he already had at work, heads over to older neighbor's house to help him figure out his DVD player. And then, after an hour, when neighbor calls back saying he can't remember what Jason did to make it work, well, he goes back over and helps again.

That is just one of the many reasons why I love my husband. He's the best! I sure appreciate his patience and all that he does for us. He's been fixing a bunch of my "mistakes" lately, like almost killing the filter system on the pool, getting the jets to work again on the hot tub, etc, etc, etc. Hope he knows how much I love him!

Spoke too soon

It's been a busy, full week! On Memorial Day we went to a ward pancake breakfast at Leroy Jackson Park. I was the only one who signed up to help entertain kids and was a little grumpy about that, but all it took was a basket of assorted balls, bases for kickball, frisbees, and our little parachute. I have to admit I had a good time in spite of myself. :) Later that morning some of the young men came over and jumped into the pretty cold swimming pool to do some merit badge requirements. And then we went over to the Okerlunds' home and had a great time finishing out the holiday with them.

Tuesday afternoon was bright and sunny. Rhiannon's birthday pool party went very, very well. Wednesday the kids went to the pool on base for a Super Star swim party, and then the last day of school came on Thursday. Both kids were kinda quiet that day--they admitted they weren't very excited about saying goodbye to their teachers! Friday we greeted the start of summer by dejunking our rooms, and then we had some friends over for pizza and swimming that night.

Last night Rhiannon and some of her friends from church sang at a memorial service for a family in our ward who lost a baby a couple weeks ago. The mother is my Primary secretary and worked with the Activity Day girls prior to that. She asked that the girls sing at the service, and they did a great job, considering they learned the song Friday afternoon and sang it the following evening. The song was "Where Is Heaven?," by Janice Kapp Perry. I hope Rhiannon will always remember how she felt doing that good deed.

Yesterday we bought patio chairs. We worked, planted a garden, got in the pool, and chilled out in the evening with our Netflix movie of the week--XMen Origins Wolverine. Not my favorite X-Men movie, but it was okay. I didn't like how so many good people kept getting killed!

So the reason for the post title? On Monday I was complaining about the weather not being warm enough to raise the temperature of our cold swimming pool. Well, guess what--we started the week out around 75-80 degrees. And now we're straight into the 100's. It's hot. And a little muggy. The house gets pretty hot and I want to sit in the pool all day! Hopefully I've learned my lesson and won't complain about the weather anymore!!!

Wanna join us?

A DECADE'S worth of fun packed into one weekend!

Yesterday we wrapped up a weekend's worth of celebrating Rhiannon's 10th birthday. Thanks to all who called to say hi to her--she lit up every time the phone rang. :)

On Sunday she woke up to balloons on her bed and money on the bathroom mirror. We ate powdered donuts for breakfast (her request), Spaghettios with meatballs for lunch (her request), and Wal-Mart take-n-bake pizzas with mozzarella sticks (her request) for dinner. It was great to have Howard and Sandi over to join us for the evening festivities, too. :)

She got spoiled rotten with fun clothes, books, DS games, and toys, and she loved her smiley face birthday cake. We tried out "Take the Cake" ice cream for the first time--Jason and I liked it in small doses. It tastes just like someone mixed cake, frosting, and ice cream together with a fork. :)

Then yesterday we had a few of Rhiannon's friends over for a pool party. Since I was the only adult there most of the time, I didn't want it to be TOO big. Man, it was definitely the way to go. The kids were great, very respectful and fun. They graciously let me drag them from the pool for a quick craft/cupcake/present opening intermission, and then they all jumped back into the pool and hot tub as fast as they could. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO grateful that the pool water wasn't too cold. It was at first, but the kids hung in there and didn't seem to care after a few minutes!

Happy Birthday, Rhiannon! We love you and are so happy you are in our family!

Here's more Smilebox fun...sorry, I just can't help myself--someone needs to stop me!
