September is flying by!

Just a quick check-in for September--this month is flying by!

Rhiannon:

  • took her senior pictures for the yearbook; relieved that there were some good ones!
  • took the ACT a second time
  • piano lessons--really excited for her personal piano recital next month
  • football games in the band section
  • band council
  • online psychology class
  • enjoying 2 free periods during the day VERY much
  • improved her SAT score--went from a 1290 to a 1400.  We were very happy for her!
  • all-day band trip down to Riverside for field show critique
  • loving Sister Decker's lessons in early-morning seminary
  • ordered a dress online for Homecoming next month (so far she plans to go with friends)
  • completed online college applications for University of Nevada Reno, Utah State, and Northern Arizona University, so far.
  • accidentally lost some important band equipment after a football game and has done a great job of "owning it," scouring the campus, trying to get the word out and involving the whole school with announcements, talking to school staff, etc.  The equipment still hasn't shown up--but we are very proud of her for doing her very best to try to locate them and find them.

Wade:

  • robotics club
  • lots of cross-country practices--he wishes he was faster, but he's come such a long ways from when he started in July.  Now he can run a 5K easily without stopping.  First cross country meet is this Friday!  His favorite practices are the ones up in the hills behind the community college.
  • went to his first middle school dance last Friday--enjoyed just sitting and laughing with friends
  • at a Court of Honor tonight, he earned the merit badges for golf, life-saving, and traffic safety.  Just needs to finish communications merit badge and then he'll have his Life rank
  • piano lessons
  • about one more month of Deacons!  He has enjoyed serving as Deacons president, too
  • lots of time on the Destiny 2 video game
  • golf with Dad
  • math club on Mondays
  • YES engineering conference on base for middle-school boys--lots of fun
  • looking forward to celebrating his 14th birthday soon in a big way--maybe a concert? maybe a basketball game?
Jason:
  • key-note speaker at the YES engineering conference.  Wade said Dad did a good job and made it fun
  • played two rounds of back-to-back golf on Friday with friends and enjoyed the beautiful weather
  • spoke in church up in Mammoth last week
  • constant craziness and stress at work (so his wife is very happy when he goes out and plays golf for stress relief!)
  • bought a new iPhone--his old one is trashed
  • continues to take good care of our family

Verity:
  • balance--still trying to find it.  School job is way, way more stressful and involved than last year, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed.  Grateful for those moments, though few, when I feel like I've got a handle on it all. ;)
  • enjoyed speaking in Lone Pine today at their small branch
  • enjoyed: date night with hubby, lunch with a friend, book club dinner, church leadership meetings, staying up "late" with family to watch America's Got Talent show, stake auxiliary training and General Women's broadcast the last two weekends
  • good news at a dermatology appointment about a bump on my cheek--benign, just means I'm getting older, ha-ha!
  • looking forward to a "girls getaway" college trip with Rhiannon this week--going to check out Reno and look at it a little more closely with her

Though life is a little more fast-paced and we often feel too busy, we are grateful for family time, a quiet weeknight here and there, and moments that remind us that we really are doing okay and have so much to be thankful for!

We're still here

We're still here.  Just super, super busy with last-month-of-school activities, group projects, basketball games, volunteering, youth conference, business travel, and getting the pool open and ready. I got to speak at stake conference, too!

A longer post will happen later.  For today, just two things:

First, a tender mercy.  Tuesday was so crazy.  After an already packed day, that afternoon I had to have the kids in two different places at the same time on opposite ends of town.  I knew I could figure it out, but I was so, so, so tired all of a sudden.  I rested my head on the table for just a moment to calm the crazy, and right at that moment the phone rang.  A friend was calling about carpooling to one of the kids' activities and it helped SO much!!!!  I realized I could ask for help (!) and asked another friend to help get Wade to and from--she helped me so much, too!  Such a tiny thing, but that kindness opened up the evening for me and gave me the strength and sanity I needed to get people where they needed to be and then steal an hour of precious prep time before my institute lesson that night.

Second, our family has been playing this together as much as possible lately, a card game called Dominion:

Uncle Brett introduced it to us last summer, and our friends the Littons brought their set over a few weeks ago and played with us.  We liked it so much that Jason bought it, along with an app for different game scenarios.  It is a T-O-N of fun.

A nice break in the middle of all the chaos! :)
