Playing catch-up: Wade's 14th Birthday and ordination!

Wade's 14th birthday on October 21 was a happy day.  It was a busy weekend with the high school's Homecoming dance the same evening as Wade's birthday, too, but I think Wade felt the love and enjoyed the day!

We opened presents in the morning, something I don't think we've ever done before but Wade requested.  His giant gift, a trip to a Warriors game with his dad in December, would happen later, and he was spoiled with other fun gifts, too.

The gift that touched my heart was Rhiannon's.  It has started to sink for both kids that this time next year will be a little different with Rhiannon at college, and the thought made them both sad.  So it was important to Rhiannon to surprise Wade for his birthday and do something out of the ordinary, especially since she'd be gone that night with friends to a dance.

Rhiannon treated him to lunch at Jack in the Box and then drove him up to the Indian Wells Brewery and bought Wade his choice of special sodas there.  I think there were a few other things they did, too, but her insistence on getting away with her brother was very touching.  These two are best friends, and my heart squeezes a little to think of the adjustment they'll have to make when Rhiannon isn't living at home.

The next day Wade was ordained to the office of teacher at church!  He is very excited to be with friends in the teachers quorum.  We kept the event small but I know it meant a lot to our home teacher  Allen Robins and Wade's Scout leader David Foster that Wade invited them personally to participate.

We love Wade and are very, very proud of him!!

Off to Girls Camp

Rhiannon and I went off to Girls Camp the last week of July.  We both had a tremendously positive experience and were glad to be there.  We worked hard, made a lot of memories, and strengthened friendships and testimonies.

I loved Rhiannon's response:

"I came home last night from one of the best experiences of my life. It was my first time as a Youth Camp Leader (YCL). I was scared at first, but my cabin girls, fellow YCL's and all of the other amazing people there made it a total blast. I'm now a better leader, better friend, and a better sister. Just a better person in general.  I'm so grateful I had the opportunity and that my foot held up!!!!! I love you guys!!"

I've served in the Young Women organization for a gazillion years, and I always avoided Girls Camp like. the. plague.  I didn't want anything to do with girl drama and I didn't want to be away from home that long and have to make the long, hard drive up into the mountains to do it.

Well, after being up there that week, I realized that I'd missed out on some special experiences all those other years.   I'm so grateful for the courage, kindness, service, love, and miracles that I saw throughout the week, for the opportunity to rub shoulders with amazing adults and young women who made me smile and laugh and feel. the. love. every day that week.

Here was my list from the week:

"On my last morning of Girls Camp, three sweet girls approached me with big smiles on their faces and said, "Sister Cushing, we have a gift for you, for surviving your first time at camp." It was super funny and weirdly thoughtful at the same time, haha!

I could probably write a book of all the experiences up at beautiful Camp Wilderness this week, but to give you an idea, here are just a few (of many) highlights:

I rappelled off a bridge.
I drove up and down a mountain.
I *tried to* sleep with mice in my cabin.
I went a week without showering, by choice. #babywipesRULE
I laughed and laughed and laughed, then laughed some more.
I walked a huge, crazy hard (for me) hike.
I saw countless examples of love, patience, service, and friendship.
I saw miracles and the "hand of God" often.
I ate REALLY good food.
I felt the Spirit and God's love for every person up there with me.

So grateful for the experience, for answered prayers, and for the many, many adults and girls who made it a wonderful week!"

Can't wait to go and do it again next year!

March winds blow!

Happy Sunday!  It is very windy today!  I love listening to the wind, but I'm sure glad we don't have to be out in it much today.  We are fasting today for various things, going to church, and then joining the Johnson family (Scott and Marie) for dinner at their house.  Then the kids will go to a stake fireside.  A busy Sunday!

The rest of our weekend has been fun, too.  On Friday night, Rhiannon went to the high school's Mr. BHS pageant with friends, and Wade went to Halle Evans' birthday party (he has been to a lot of bday parties lately!)

Then yesterday Wade went with his Boy Scout troop to the Trona Pinnacles for a fun morning hike and lunch.  Rhiannon spent a LOT of time working on homework, Jason worked hard out in the backyard redoing sprinkler lines for the garden area, and I went to a Women's Conference at the stake center.  That night Connor Litton invited Rhiannon and Wade to go play games with a bunch of young single adults--they were some of the youngest kids there but had a good time.  It was nice of the Littons to pick up Rhiannon and Wade--I went and got them about an hour later (both kids said they didn't want to stay long because they were TIRED, haha!)

I also wanted to mention the kindness of neighbors this weekend.  Kristin Hawkins brought over some divine chocolate cookies to thank me for helping with her friend that she'd brought to Women's Conference.  She had to stay in the gym the whole time helping with the service projects, and she'd been worried about what to do with this new acquaintance who wanted to come.  Jesse was great and easy to talk to--it wasn't a big deal at all, but Kristin sure was grateful.  What a sweetheart!   That afternoon another neighbor, Margo DiDomenico, came by with some wrapped "puzzles" for the kids.  They were boxes of Cheez-It crackers, haha!  The kids were ecstatic and I sent them straight out the door to go thank her.  Margo had seen a funny post I'd put on Facebook about how the kids were down to their last box of crackers, haha!  What a thoughtful, funny thing to do!

We are all counting the days to Spring Break--one more week!  We don't have any big plans set--Jason has to work much of the week--but we are all looking forward to some down time and a family camping trip that Friday and Saturday.

A side note:  I complained about the early-morning barking dog on Facebook, and the next day it stopped.  I have had decent, uninterrupted sleep since Thursday and I feel like a rock star.  Sleep is good for my soul, haha!

Verity's EPIC 40th birthday!

The Monday after my 40th birthday a friend asked me how the weekend went.  I said, "Ya know, I could celebrate my 40th birthday every week if people would let me!"  It was the most amazing birthday yet, and that is saying something because I LOVE BIRTHDAYS and celebrate them as long as possible!

The morning of my birthday we hosted a birthday breakfast bash.  I told Jason this was my birthday gift from him--it's always a little crazy with so many people over, haha!  I sent some invites via Facebook and made some phone calls and texts, inviting friends and neighbors to help me "mourn the passing of my 30s," to wear black, bring a tasty breakfast item to share, and bring their families.  There were about 65 of us, plenty of food, and lots of laughter.  Such a great turnout! My heart was so happy, being surrounded by people who loved me, that I couldn't be sad about getting old!  The party went from 9 to almost 11:30am!

About halfway through, Rhiannon and Wade and a bunch of their friends walked over to the park so they could stretch out and have more room.  It made me happy to see them having such a good time, too!

The birthday festivities continued when Brant, Chris, and Greyson arrived!  We went to Subway for lunch and then chilled and relaxed the rest of the day.  We had fun going to the park again, and we had a great dinner of Papa John's pizza and a cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory that they'd brought up for me--white chocolate raspberry--delish!!!  About the only fail for the weekend was my movie choice--I chose Furious 7, and it wasn't the best.  The car sequences were cool, but the "women as objects" was constant and uncomfortable.  Thankfully the roaring fire in the fireplace and the company made up for my mistake!

I was seriously spoiled for my birthday.  There was a cute sign in the yard, 4 bouquets of flowers, thoughtful gifts, wonderful cards, lovely phone calls and Facebook messages, a perfect Dr. Seuss book about getting old, and 2 different lunches with friends.

I gave this birthday a lot of thought.  I bought an airplane ticket to go see my friend Linden and her family in Montana in June this year--can't wait!  I also encouraged family and friends on Facebook to help me celebrate my 40th with me.  I posted:

"For my 40th birthday this weekend (gulp!), I'm asking a BIG favor of my Facebook friends. I'd like the world to be a little happier, shine a little brighter. Help me celebrate! Show kindness, replace fear with faith, and/or go on an adventure! Enjoy the weekend!"

The response to this request was fantastic.  People told me about service they did, time spent with family, or their efforts to increase faith.  It was remarkable and made me so, so happy!

Chicago and WisconSheen 2015

Our summer vacation this year was epic!

We flew to Chicago on June 30th.  That morning before we left for the LA airport, we were greeted by an unpleasant surprise at the front door.  All of Ridgecrest this summer has been covered in these insects called seed bugs.  They are harmless but a major nuisance.  We'd left the porch lights on through the night, and since those bugs are drawn to the lights, well, you can imagine.  The front of the house, especially the walls and front door, were covered in these seed bugs.  All I could do was hold back my tears, sweep up the pile of mostly dead ones inside the doorway, pray that they stayed at bay until pest control came and leave for the airport!  (Pest control did come and it was a weird but comforting sight to see piles of the dead bugs when we got home!)

The drive wasn't too bad, considering rush hour traffic, and our flight was nice.  We got to our Crowne Plaza hotel in downtown Chicago around 4:30pm and had a good time that night walking the streets of Greek Town, sampling some of the yummy food in that area.  We loved everything we tried, from the Panhellenic Pastry Shop's goodies to Mr. Greek's gyros, an amazing breakfast at Eggsperience, to...deep dish pizza at Giordano's down the street!  We waited 45 minutes for our pizza to come out, but, boy, it was worth it!!!

The Rich and Donna Sheen Reunion wasn't officially starting until Thursday, so we had some CA Cushing time to fill until then and saw some neat stuff!  We purchased a Go Chicago pass in advance that paid for 3 Chicago attractions--we chose the Museum and Science and Industry, the Adler Planetarium, and the Field Museum as our three.  (We were going to visit the famous Shedd Aquarium as part of the family reunion.)

The Go Pass was a good way to do it--we didn't save tons of money, per se, but it bought us front of the line privileges and some neat shows.  It also gave us some focus because there was a LOT to see in Chicago.  If we'd had more time, it would have been fun to go see the downtown shopping area on the "Magnificent Mile" or go to the top of the John Hancock Observatory or the Willis Tower to get a view of the city that way.  We were happy with our choices and time spent, though!

The Museum of Science and Industry was H-U-G-E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They had an entire German U505 submarine inside!  We enjoyed a tour of that!  Other highlights were the "Journey to Space" movie in the ginormous Omnimax theater, and the Science hall that had everything you could imagine, from flying an airplane, checking your pulse, to recreating a tornado.  Lots of fun!!!

One of the highlights for me, even though it was a little crazy, was experiencing downtown Chicago in the middle of rush hour pedestrian traffic.  HOLY MOLY, there  were people EVERYWHERE!  We walked upstream to get to the famous "Bean" statue and took some fun photos there.

I took very few pictures of the Adler Planetarium, sad face!  I enjoyed going into the famous Adler Sphere to study constellations and loved the fact that they'd had to build the room around it.  The views of the city skyline outside the planetarium were hard to beat!!!  (and, yes, I did ask a stranger to take our family picture!  It was a must!)

I do need to say a word about the weather that week:  heavenly!!!!  Brisk, 70's, total opposite of the desert, haha!

The Field Museum was another very large place.  The taxidermy area was diverse and felt almost like a zoo!

On Thursday morning we picked up some light breakfast items at Whole Foods, checked out of the hotel, and proceeded to fight more crazy downtown traffic to get just a few miles to the Shedd Aquarium, where we were kicking off the reunion activities.  It was so fun to see everyone--big hugs all around!!!  We missed Jordan and Amelia's family--they had just purchased a home and Jord had started a job at Adobe--we can't wait to see them at the Idaho reunion in 2017, though!!!

This year's reunion planners were Chris and Brant, and Derrick and Traci, and they did a PHENOMENAL job.  Though it was tricky getting to the aquarium, we were so glad to have done it first thing in the morning because the line to enter was so looooooooong by the time we got out!  We enjoyed a water show together at the aquarium and got a big group picture there!  For lunch we fought our way through a Chicago hot dog food truck (fun but crazy ordering for 25 people!), and then the next few hours people had free time before heading to "home base" in New Berlin, Wisconsin.  I can't remember exactly what everyone else did while we were in the Field Museum, but I know the Tom/Lydia/Derrick/Traci/Chris/Brant group had a blast looking for some famous movie sites downtown, Logan and Amy's family went to the Navy Pier where there was a Ferris wheel and rides, and I think Mom and Dad did the smart thing and tried to get out ahead of traffic, haha!

Our entire group agreed that the drive from Chicago to peaceful New Berlin, Wisconsin was the absolute worst part of the trip.  I don't know how long we were all sitting in it, but it took at least 2 or 3 hours.  Our kids slept through some of the frustration, haha:

After dealing with that unbelievable traffic and getting off the highway, the drive through rural farms, corn fields and quiet roads was so therapeutic.  We thought, "Wow, we could retire here!!!"  It was green, there were tractors on the road, the gas station employees were super friendly, and it was just so beautiful and peaceful!  A total opposite of the busy-ness of the city!

The story behind our "home base" house is pretty fun.  Originally this whole reunion was planned around the fact that Brant and Chris lived in Crown Point, IN, just outside of Chicago.  6 months or so before the reunion date, Brant and Chris moved to San Bernardino, CA, and we had a little problem, haha!  There was some discussion about moving the reunion location, but some of us had already purchased tickets and had our hearts set on Chicago.

Luckily Derrick and Traci had some gracious friends, the Monties, in Wisconsin who were willing to let us use their home.  Cherie and her kids were gone, but her husband Mike was there and joined in some of our activities with us.  Boy, he's a saint! :)  We just made ourselves right at home there and thoroughly enjoyed the location.  There were horses and other pets, a trampoline, a fire pit, friendly neighbors, walking trails galore, a playground, a basketball hoop, a little play house, and, all the Monties' kids' toys, haha!  It really was the perfect solution, and we were all very, very grateful to the Montie family for their kindness!

Mom and Dad, Derrick and Traci, and Tom and Lydia stayed at the house and the rest of us stayed in nearby hotels.  The Monties' home was the perfect place to congregate and there was never a shortage of things to see or do!

I've got to say something about family reunion food.  It's seriously the best.  Mom and Dad did the "Chicago Dogs" food truck, Tom and Lydia did sweet and sour chicken (which was heavenly after that terrible traffic!), Logan and Amy prepared a super picnic spread, the CA Cushings sprang for CiCi's pizza (thank you, honey!!!), Derrick and Traci did all-you-can-eat nachos, and Brant and Chris covered a fantastic 4th of July meal with hot dogs and bbq chicken sandwiches.  Then there were s'mores, ice cream treats, pies, etc!  Yum!!!

On Friday morning we drove to Milwaukee and spent almost a full day on the beach of Lake Michigan.  We had a BLAST!  I'm pretty proud of myself for being the first one to get out in that freezing water, but I just had to!  When else was I going to be back here, ya know?  Mom and Dad and Logan and Amy rented some umbrellas, a paddle boat and board, and a canoe for the afternoon and that definitely amped up the fun!

That night some of the adults did a reunion-first and had an adults-only activity at a putt-putt course.  We definitely need to do THAT again!  We missed Logan and Amy (their family needed some downtime and clean laundry!), but it was great doing that.  Lots of laughs, lots of good competition, and some delicious ice cream at the end.  The man third from the left is Mike Montie--we were glad he could join us!

Rhiannon and Wade did a little babysitting back at the house with some of the younger cousins Beck, Maggie, Moses, Max, and Greyson, and they said they had a fun time, too!

On the 4th of July, we met up at a local movie theater and watched Inside Out together--a fantastic movie!  Definitely need to own that one! :)

The rest of that final reunion day sped by too quickly.  Logan and Amy's family visited the Sprecher brewery and brought back some delicious soda.  There were games outdoors, including Twister and an American Flag search.  We played a fun, crazy game indoors, too--Chris had taped two giant balls of prizes together and we had to fight our way through the tape to get stuff as it got passed around.  We also had our traditional family meeting to talk about the next reunion (Idaho 2017), had a family home evening message given by Brant, and a talent show (I am kicking myself for not taking pictures of that!)  We did a few illegal fireworks out on the road, and then by that time it was time to say goodbye until the next time!  That is always so hard for me to do!!!!!!!!!!

We were so grateful to those who worked hard to put this memorable trip together.  We all agreed that it was neat to go somewhere few of us had ever been before!  I CANNOT wait until the next one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are a few more fun pictures from the week:

Twister--Traci spray painted the circles into the grass and used an app on a phone to play the game!

View of the river in downtown Chicago

This statue called "Man and Fish" outside the aquarium was hilarious!

Beautiful, cloudy Chicago--we love you, just not your traffic!

Cuties!  These two did a good job with their cousins, too!

Group family photo at the water show!  We took up 3 rows!
Front row:  Abby, Evan, Beck, Maggie, Will, Olivia, Collin, Greyson
Middle row: Jason, Rhiannon, Verity, Logan, Amy, Chris, Brant
Back row:  Lydia, Hardy (behind Rhiannon's head), Max, Wade, Moses, Derrick, Traci, Mom, Dad, and Tom

The remains of this old house were across the street from the Monties' home.

A walking adventure with Uncle Tommy.  I adored the reunion t-shirts that Chris had designed and Traci had orders.  The ice cream scoops have Mom and Dad's name, and then each popsicle stick pair has their children's name and spouse, with a tiny Wisconsin shape and 2015 in the bottom corner.  Adorable!

We sure made some great memories!!!  It was hard to say goodbye to that beautiful place!

My dad said that reunions are so wonderful because we can imagine what it will be like being together forever!  We are blessed indeed to have family on both sides, people we care for and love, love, love being with!  Until next time!

The birthday that crashed my Facebook page

My 39th birthday (eek!  Last one in my 30's!) was so wonderful.  I'd taken 3 sub jobs that first week back at school and was pretty beat-down-tired by Thursday, with plans to TAKE IT EASY on my birthday the next day.

Here were some happy highlights:

9:30am--so many kind people left birthday wishes on my Facebook page that it "broke" and I couldn't view anything for a while.  So fun!

My friend Heidi Evans took me out to lunch at the local Indian restaurant, Spice Symphony.  We had a good time catching up for almost 2 hours!

Fun phone calls and emails.  Thanks, Derrick and Traci, for the creepy/funny Happy Birthday rendition, haha!

Sweet Rhiannon told her seminary class it was my birthday!  She was my selfie partner in crime after school, too.

Jason brought home half a dozen GORGEOUS roses AND took us out to Ale' Steakhouse for dinner--YUM!  We finished up with a Baskin Robbins cake at home afterwards.

This week I got a special birthday gift using my Christmas and birthday money--an electric wheat grinder!  I've already used it twice and can't wait to be a Little Red Hen with it!

Thanks to all for the well-wishes, gifts, phone calls, and kindnesses.  I felt the love!
