September update...and here comes October!

Highlights from the last couple weeks:

--for a "family home evening" night, we met our friends Howard and Sandi for dinner at China Express and enjoyed catching up with them!  Their home here is up for sale and the home in South Dakota is coming along quickly.

--Rhiannon participated in a jazz band activity and played with her small group at a celebration of international culture in Ridgecrest.  She said it was fun and she knew many people there.  (She also played with the band at a football game last Friday and an out-of-town competition last night--busy!)

--Oscar the dog got a MUCH needed haircut.

--Jason put on a golf tournament for work.  He said there were about 24 participants and the weather was great!

--I drove to Bakersfield one Saturday to take a required class for a teacher induction program I'm in.  The class was great, but I HATE that drive.  I drove as slow as the semi-trucks to cope.  That same night Rhiannon and I went to the stake center to see the General Conference Women's Broadcast.  We snuck out afterwards and got dinner at Jack-in-the-Box, just the two of us.  Love spending time with that girl--I need to do it more often.

--Last Sunday we drove up to Bishop, CA, for their ward conference there.  I loved having my family there with me, and we all had a great time seeing old friends and talking after church at their ward potluck.  It was great to test the new car, too--it's definitely a worthy family travel vehicle!

--This week went by quickly.  Orthodontist appointment for both kids, brought pizza to sister missionaries one night (we were supposed to host them, but I was not feeling great and super tired that night).  Band practice, math club, piano, Crossfit for Jason, tests at school, and Board of Review for Wade who earned his Star rank in scouting--yay!

--On Friday night Jason and I had a date night and had a delicious dinner at Olvera's--love their Mexican food there.

--Jason is my hero for emptying a rodent trap today.  We've seen a few "creatures" in the yard over the past few months and saw droppings out by the woodpile.  I ordered the biggest shock trap I could find on Amazon, and after two weeks we got our first one.  Luckily Jason saw it before I did and disposed of the mouse for me.  I love this man!

A much-needed update

Let's start with the dogs, shall we?

Samson:  needs a haircut.  Won't stay out of the kitchen.  Still the best nap companion anyone could wish for.  Lives for walks and dances in circles when he's fed.

Oscar:  needs a haircut.  Won't stay out of the kitchen.  Gets very confused and doesn't know what to do when there isn't a space on the couch for him.  Lives for walks and FETCH!  (He kinda goes berserk for it).

Cushing pool:  will be opened soon.  We wanted to open it yesterday, but instead we got some rain and wind.  Right now Jason is draining off the big puddle from the top of the cover.

Family garden:  is doing pretty well so far!  We have eaten spinach and cilantro from it, and one teeny tiny strawberry.  The kale, lettuce, radishes, peppers, roma tomatoes, and zucchini are giving it a go!  We'll see what happens when it starts to get very hot.  And I am ECSTATIC by all the apricots on the trees!

Jason went to:  an Orioles game this week during his work trip on the east coast.  He didn't eat great that week, nothing memorable (I like to ask), but he DID get to watch the Orioles in a luxury suite!  Fun!!!

Wade: finished his History project early (Hurray!).  He aged paper, painted some rolling pins bright red, and then taped the paper to the rolling pins to make a scroll of sorts.  Then he wrote fake journal entries on it from the Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China.  It turned out great, and his mom hardly laid a finger on it.  You can't say that for a lot of the history/science projects that kids hand in nowadays.

Wade: also went on a fun Boy Scout campout Friday night up to Kennedy Meadows.  There are 9 boys in his group and 7 were able to go, with 4 adults.  I had to laugh when I pulled up to the church parking lot--I've never seen so many bags of chips, Doritos, and treats, haha!  They are having a good time in Scouts and learning a lot.

Rhiannon: can go on a date in 30 days.  She is pretty excited about that.  (So is Mom; Dad is not. Boys are evil.) She's still plugging along on her drivers ed course online, so, no, she won't be driving on her birthday, but she's working on it.  We were SUPER proud of her efforts in school this past quarter--so far she has all A's and a B.

Rhiannon also: ROCKED at yesterday's piano recital.  So happy for her!  Months and months and months of practice time into that performance, and she did a fantastic job.  (Video coming soon).

(Coolest blogging pause ever:  Just picked up a FaceTime call from Logan and Amy and their family in HUNGARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Technology is the coolest thing ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Just for fun:  Rhiannon, Wade, and I went to the Cerro Coso Community College band concert on Thursday night to see some friends in it.  It was SO GOOD!!!

A week in: and I'm very, very, very slowly learning the ins and outs and ups and downs of my new calling at church as stake Young Women president.  Pray for me with youth conference happening in less than 2 weeks.  Nothing like jumping right in, I guess!  My composure varies by the day--sometimes I'm cool and easy-breezy; other times I am completely, utterly overwhelmed.

Life is good.  We are happy and healthy and hanging in there!

February is here!

Wow.  It's February already?  We had a good, fast week.  Here are a few details:

Today (Saturday) is a nice busy day.  Wade went and helped with Scouting for Food (there was a good turnout for that and they finished an hour early--yay!), Rhiannon got a haircut, Jason repaired a TV, I did some sewing repairs and ironing.

Silly boy--when you hijack my phone, I put your handsome funny face on the blog!

Right now Wade is playing downstairs with his buddy Jacob Williams, who had a little free time this morning to hang out, so Wade invited him over to play his Lego Avengers game.  Rhiannon has two babysitting jobs later and is working furiously on her math homework for the weekend.

Last night both our kids were gone to separate birthday parties, so after Jason got home from a grueling Crossfit workout (called the "Crippler"--yikes!), we went hot tubbin', haha!  The hot tub had been on the fritz for a couple weeks, so it was nice to get in and enjoy it after it was repaired.  We both thought we needed to make use of that hot tub more often!

Wednesday was a non-stop day in our week.  Of note, Wade got a well-check physical finally and is doing great.  He is 5 feet, 2.5 inches, now, and right where he needs to be.  The doctor was impressed by his maturity--love that kid.

One day this week the United States Secretary of Defense came to China Lake for a brief afternoon visit.  Jason didn't get to see him, but he did prepare information for him.  Pretty cool to have a visitor like that in the middle of nowhere!

On Tuesday I took a morning sub job at Richmond.  It was a pretty good deal for me because Wade's middle school band and orchestra was coming that morning to do a performance, and I got to see it! I was so impressed by Wade's playing on the mallet set--he was loud, clear, and on target, and his manners were impeccable (there were a few girls in his band that I wanted to take outside, just sayin').  Very happy to see that he is doing well in the concert band and showing those older 7th and 8th graders a thing or two!

Wade is standing in the very back, just to the right.

I asked this beauty to take a math break and go take a picture for me.  She was excited to get a haircut trim today, haha!  Love this girl!  We are so proud of her!

Catching up on the last few weeks, list style

Since mid-August, here are some things we've been busy with:

--I gave a talk in sacrament meeting at church about following the Savior's example in our teaching

--Rhiannon and I joined several other moms and daughters from our ward and went to a music variety show at the high school put on by several friends of ours and members of the Ridgecrest Musical Enrichment Society.  Last year we went to their Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat production.  I'm always amazed at the talent in this community!  It was a great night.

--Rhiannon and I went on the youth temple baptism trip to the Los Angeles temple.  I snuck away and did an endowment session with others from our stake.  When we got out 3 hours later (LOTS of people in that Spanish-speaking session!), I found out that the kids had stayed in the visitor's center the whole time because a water main broke and the temple was closed for all other activities.  We drowned our disappointment in a tasty meal at Cheesecake Factory afterwards, haha!  I know those kids will be blessed for sacrificing their time that day.  Rhiannon stayed positive and said they had a good time watching Meet the Mormons.

--Our family went to Wade's first Boy Scout Court of Honor and were very surprised by all the badges and awards he got.  His 11-year-old Scout leader said he will miss Wade a lot when he turns 12 next month.  Can you tell Wade is growing in this picture? :)

--Aunt Lydia was on a roll one day making drawings for family members and friends.  She made our day with these:

I wonder what she'd come up with for Jason and Wade?  I'll have to ask her!

--general busy-ness with sub jobs, Back-to-School nights, band practices, piano lessons, decluttering a few things around the house, swimming (a little), gun practice with Dad, service projects and callings, and the daily grind.

--Other news to report:  the horrible seed bugs seem to have disappeared.  I'm not sure where they went, which is a little disconcerting!  We are also running out of things to replace--over the past few weeks we bought a washer and dryer, new computer, new printer, and new tires for the Infiniti.  Ouch!

--Labor Day weekend was wonderful this year!  Rhiannon played the cymbals with the high school band in our community's annual 9/11 parade.  It was our first time attending since it started 7 or 8 years ago.  We've been missing out!--it was really  neat to see so many American flags waving!  It was also cool to have a special guest at the front of the parade--our Congressman Kevin McCarthy, the House Majority Leader of the current US House of Representatives!

Other Labor Day fun included swimming, grilling (Jason's best steaks yet!!!), dinner with Howard Collins, and a fun pancake breakfast with our church family.  We all agreed that this long weekend was MUCH NEEDED and enjoyed to the fullest!

Life is good!

List of exclamation marks

Halloween feels like a lifetime ago!

Since then,

Wade performed in a fall elementary piano recital and did a phenomenal job!

Grandma Sue got checked into a hospital while visiting my parents down in Texas (she's doing much better now and staying with my parents until she goes back to Idaho!)

Jason traveled to St. Louis for work!

Rhiannon picked up a semi-regular babysitting gig!

New gate installation started...and stalled.  Gates were the wrong color and holes were dug in the wrong place.  (BUT when they're all finished it will be major exclamation marks!!!)

I made some cool crafts at a Super Saturday event!  I also got a jump-start on our family Christmas cards!

Wade played flag football and got a cool interception at his last game!

Jason completed ANOTHER Ragnar relay race! In Las Vegas!  They placed 34th out of 423 teams, which is crazy good, and even crazier when you hear the story about their team!  (post and pics to come!)

Rhiannon went to the dentist and had no cavities!

Rhiannon and I drove friends down to the Los Angeles temple and did some service there!
And I got the "precious cargo" there and back safely!

I worked on Battle of the Books and institute lessons, plus one sub job!

Rhiannon played the piano beautifully and did two value presentations at YW in Excellence last night!

Jason taught a fantastic lesson on eternal marriage for our Gospel Principles class last Sunday!

The kids are working on a Carol of the Bells duet and sound awesome!

We are getting new leadership for our stake, or group of wards here in Ridgecrest, this weekend!  Since our stake center hasn't even begun to be repaired, we'll be meeting at the local fairgrounds!

I love exclamation marks.  Can you tell?  I was pretty cranky yesterday (translation:  beat-down tired), so I'm happy to be back in tip-top exclamation mark form today.  !!!

A rickety ladder sure puts things in perspective

This morning Jason climbed a really tall ladder to tear down some unused, unsightly wires that have been hanging from the eaves of our second story forever.  I am so glad the wires are down--it was a small thing, but it had been bugging me for a while!  Our neighbor John across the street loaned the ladder and Jason made quick work of the project today.

I was terrified, watching him climb up and down while I spotted him at the ground.  I wonder what was going through his head!  On the last climb, I kept my mouth shut and said a silent prayer to God that He would help me keep the ladder steady and help Jason stay on the ladder.  I was trying not to think about him falling, and instead tried to imagine God holding the ladder with me.  At the very least, it helped me to focus on what I was doing and try not to bother Jason as he finished up the project.  I'm grateful for that answered prayer and for my super-hero hubby!!!!

On to the week's update:

Rhiannon enjoyed Rally Week at her high school--each day had a different dress-up theme and then on Friday there was a huge pep rally, recognizing all the different fall sports teams.  She said it was loud and fun!  Friday night she went to the football game with friends and had a good time with them.  Yesterday she and Wade ran a marathon of errands with me.  As we were leaving the Stater Bros. grocery store, this store employee--a really cute, sharp-looking boy--was putting away carts and gave Rhiannon the biggest smile.  She smiled right back.  It was sort of an out-of-body experience for me as a mom, watching that happen, knowing that she would be walking on Cloud 9 after that.  We laughed and laughed and laughed!  Still makes me smile thinking about that, and brings back some funny teenage memories of my own!  It was a long, tiring week for Rhiannon that ended on some high notes.

Last night she joined me at our neighbor Kristin's home to watch the Church's General Women's broadcast and eat yummy food.  Kristin had invited several moms and their daughters over--it was a lot of fun and the food was delicious!  Everything from pumpkin bisque to homemade bread to salted caramel dessert bars.  TASTY!

Wade finished up his Athlete badge at Webelos on Thursday night which was a big deal because we hadn't done too well preparing him for that. Somehow he pulled it off--hurray!  On Friday he started in on his vice-president job and helped out at his school's Super Stars assemblies.  His teacher chose him as one of her two Students of the Month, AND he got the top Accelerated Math spot for the grading period with 75 objectives covered (this was pretty amazing--the next highest in his grade was half that amount!).  Yesterday he went to two birthday parties, to his teacher's son's bounce-house birthday party, and then to a movie with his buddy Nick in the evening.  What a life this boy leads--it's fun to see him in his element.  The big thing for him this coming week is his Arrow of Light ceremony on Thursday!

I subbed two days this week, for first graders on Thursday and Wade's fifth-grade class on Friday.  The days went by quickly and the kids were good.  The first graders were very loveable, asking for hugs and telling me they loved me, haha!  Most of the fifth graders knew me already and looked forward to the game we play at the end of a good day--they also enjoyed comparing their height to mine, knowing that many will be taller than me by the end of the year. :)

We had more construction workers here yesterday working on some concrete and brick work in the backyard, and we'll be getting the three outside gates replaced.  I am so happy about this!  The next project will be figuring out what in the world to do with our front yard landscaping now that we've turned the water system off.

The other very important thing to report is that we've had some cooler weather this weekend and it is GORGEOUS outside!  We haven't seen the end of temps in the 90's, but this break from the heat has been very, very welcome!

September has gone by so quickly!

A random weekly report!

This past week was fast and furious.

Jason got home from travel and then he was busy with his department's off-site meetings.  He invited me to join him at a dinner one night with his co-workers at the USO building.  We had a good time doing that!

Rhiannon got her first high school progress report in the mail and has all A's and B's so far--we are very proud of her and hope she'll continue to improve on those "B" classes.  For a youth activity on Thursday night she did an Iron Chef competition and had a lot of fun with that!  She also got invited to her first "high school party"--her friend Kevin from seminary invited her to come to one of the parks in town and play some games like Kick-the-Can, etc.  She was excited about it but then her mom chickened out when the sky filled with lightning.  She told her friend to call her again the next time!

Wade had a very busy week of campaigning and found out on Friday that he WON the student council vice-president spot!  He is super excited because 3 of his friends won, too--Nick got president, Carson won treasurer, and Tucker won for secretary.  An all-boy council--should be interesting. :)  He also hit the streets with me yesterday to earn money for his school's Kiwanis fundraiser and had a great experience with that, earning $93 on one street!

On Wednesday at the Battle of the Books meeting, I donned an apron and did the "Elephant Toothpaste" science demo for the kids attending, and, man, that was a blast.  My institute lesson on missionary work was successful, and I learned a lot at an institute training on Thursday night.  I've got a lot on my mind with the annual 7-Day emergency preparedness challenge that's almost over--I haven't "participated" so much as I've made lists on things I'd like to learn about and do and save up to purchase.  SO MUCH information!

Friday night we attended another USO Open Mic night, our first since Rhiannon's birthday party back in May.  We were just there to listen this time, and there were sure some great acts.  The final one before we left was a little different, though.  A very talented belly dancer performed for what felt like FOREVER, while some musicians banged on drums in the background for her.  She was really good, but it was pretty awkward, too.  That's all I will say about that, ha!

To end on a spiritual note, I felt the truth in what Brother Robins, our home teacher, said in his closing remarks of his talk in church today.  He said, "I know that if I will let Him, God will bring me home."  Both talks were great, about learning from burdens and adversity and strengthening our relationship with the Savior.  It was a good day.

ps.  The new air conditioning units are heavenly!

This week in review

This summer is F-L-Y-I-N-G by!

It's been a fast, busy week for us.  Having our family complete again after last week was super nice, too!

On Sunday night I did a batch of indexing to support the Worldwide Indexing Event through the Church's Family Search service.  It was an exciting 24 hours for me, as I kept checking to see if the 50,000 people-mark had been met.  Later this week, I found out that this goal had been shot out of the water! 66,511 people participated and more than 5.7 MILLION records were indexed!  My family made fun of me for being obsessed with this, but I caught a tiny vision of the importance of family history and indexing and was so happy to be a part of it!

Monday night we joined our neighbors the Hawkins family and a new family in our ward, the Randalls, for a family home evening night and some delicious ice cream pies for dessert.  It was loud, crazy fun, and we had a good time getting to know each other.

Monday and Tuesday the kids and I shopped for a few school clothes locally.  It might be the first year we don't "make a trip out of town" to do that--yay!  Rhiannon and Wade did a great job staying in budget, so to speak, and had small lists, so it was an easy process.  We still need school supplies but will get to that eventually.

Tuesday night I taught institute and was very, very happy with how the lesson was received.  It was on Doctrine and Covenants sections 18 and 19, focusing on the Savior's Atonement and the worth of souls, and I'm not gonna lie, I labored over this lesson preparation.  I could feel the importance of the message and DID NOT WANT TO MESS IT UP!!!  On the way to the church, I prayed and said I didn't care how many people showed, I just wanted us to be able to feel the Spirit.  Well, there was a GREAT turnout and so many comments.  It's hard to describe it, but I know my prayer was answered and those who were there felt God's love for them.  I'm thankful for that!

The following day I found out via Facebook that the very building I'd been in last night, our stake center, had some structural integrity issues and had been shut down, as in condemned until further notice.  This is huge!  For now all 4 wards will meet in the smaller meetinghouse where we attend, just for sacrament meetings this coming Sunday.  We are all anxiously waiting to see how that will play out, as the stake center's issues will take months to fix.  Our meetinghouse doesn't have a baptismal font and its parking lot is CONSIDERABLY smaller.  Should be interesting!

Thursday night we had Wade's Webelos group over to get in our pool and pass off the Aquanaut badge--all 7 boys did a great job and completed the badge!  Wade is a good little swimmer!

Then last night  Jason and I hosted a group date night over here.  Jason grilled some tasty burgers and friends brought some delicious sides.  We played Mexican Train dominoes, laughed and talked a lot, and then a few of us jumped in the pool.  It was a perfect night and we enjoyed our friends' company!

This morning we all got outside, at Jason's encouragement, and got our yard all cleaned up, including taking down a dead pine tree, mowing the lawn, sweeping the porch, and fixing sprinklers, all before 9 am.

So we have the rest of the day to PAR-TAY! :)

Life is good. :)

Labor Day weekend is here!

Boy, are the CA Cushings ready for this weekend.  Besides a ward breakfast on Monday, there is nothing written on the calendar.  Here's what we've been up to this week and WILL be doing this weekend:

Jason--had a busy week at work with an "off-site, on-site" activity with his team.  I jokingly asked him if they were going to do trust-building exercises, and he said, "Yeah."  We went down to Costco on Monday night (1.5 hours away) and picked up food for the event, and then on Tuesday night Jason invited me to join him for a social and dinner at the local USO building (fun!).  They concluded the activities on Wednesday.  He enjoyed his first official flex Friday yesterday since the furloughs have ended and spent most of the day setting up our new computer upstairs and the many things involved with that (thanks, babe!)  Jason's weekend plans include just 3 things--training for his 1/2 marathon, doing some yard work, and swimming!

Rhiannon--says she's been really tired and needed this weekend to "sleep in."  I don't blame her!  We're what, two and a half weeks into school and we're not quite used to it yet!  She's enjoying school, it's just a long day for her, getting up at 5:15am every day of the school week.  (You can tell she's been busy because she hasn't been on Facebook too much, ha-ha!)  Here's some of what she's been studying already:

PE--volleyball
US history--Native American tribes and then European explorers
Honors English--Flowers for Algernon (book) and written essays on an autobiographical event (she chose to write about our move to Virginia)
Band--first concert is next week; she loves being able to teach the boys in her percussion group different mallet pieces
Algebra--well, algebra!
Yearbook--her class is learning about making layouts on a website, and they're also studying the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.  She really likes that book and asked if she could get her own copy!  It came in the mail last week. :)
Science--not sure, but they've already done a lab to make sparklers, and she really likes the teacher!

Then there's piano lessons and Mutual night activities to round things out.  This week for Mutual, the boys and girls got together and did an Iron Chef activity, dessert-style.  Rhiannon said it was awesome!

We're proud of this 8th grader and hope she'll get that catch-up rest she deserves.  Her plans for the weekend include sleeping in, finishing up chores, playing the piano, reading, and getting to the library!

Wade--has been working very, very hard on extra money chores to earn his part for his new iPod that came this week.  On top of his regular stuff that needs done, he's cleaned all the showers in the house, super-dusted the nooks and crannies of the dining room table set and helped me dust the pictures and shelves above the stairs (really needed done!), and emptied the fridge and wiped it clean.  Today he plans to "get up early" and get his last thing done--turning over the dirt in the garden.  It stinks that his iPod screen broke in the first place, but we're proud of Wade for working hard to correct things and help earn his half for a replacement.

Wade seemed pretty happy about having me for a sub this week, too.  I subbed in his class on Thursday, and it was a really great day--the class was fantastic and the day flew by!  It made me so happy to see him excited to have his old ma at school.  I've got to take advantage of that while I can, ha-ha!

Also this week Wade read the books Hoot and Flush.  He got out his Origami Yoda books and has been folding little Yodas and light sabers all over the place.  He went to Cub Scouts and worked on a geography belt loop, too.  I think his weekend wishes are:  swimming!  TV!  computer games and searching!  library!  and new iPod!

Me?--I enjoyed getting two "dates" in with Jason earlier in the week.  It was fun going down to Costco and getting In and Out for dinner, and then I got spoiled with another "date" the following night.  I did two sub jobs this week on Tuesday and Thursday, and I helped with Webelos Cub Scouts on Thursday night.  That wasn't my favorite thing--I LOVE that calling and I LOVE working with those boys, but there was something in the air that night and they were CRAZY!  They must need this Labor Day weekend, too, because my co-leader and I struggled to keep their attention the entire hour.  That's not usually the case!

I've been reading The Adopted Dog Bible (really good!), a young adult book called Scarlet (recommended by Rhiannon), and this super-fun kids' book called Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library.  It's like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but with books and a really cool library!

My plans for the weekend include dog walks, pulling weeds, swimming, groceries, library, reading, and ch-ch-chillin'!

"The soul should always stand ajar..."

"The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience."  --Emily Dickinson

I saw that quote this morning as I sat down to blog and thought it was fitting for how I've felt about life in general lately.  Even though I'm not feeling 100% today with allergies and a cold, I feel happy and grateful for so many things.

Here are just a few feel-good examples:

Rhiannon went to Disneyland last week and had a wonderful time with her friends in concert band.  They went to a workshop in the morning and then had 6 hours to "play," and then they got home around 11:30pm.  It was a long, full day, and she was exhausted the next day at school but survived!  She made me happy when she pulled out a Perry the Platypus stuffed animal for Wade that she'd purchased with her own money.  I was blown away by that--a small gesture but so kind and thoughtful!

On Friday Jason and I went to Wade's final school assembly of the year and watched him "walk the red carpet" three different times for completing 6th grade math objectives, competing on the 3rd grade Battle of the Books team, and reaching the Classic 2 goal in the Accelerated Reader program.  We are so proud of him!

On Saturday the kids helped us out in the backyard all morning as we cleaned up patio furniture and pool accessories, swept, and worked on the pool.  We celebrated by going to see Into Darkness, the Star Trek movie, in the afternoon.  It was really fun!

On Sunday night Jason rounded us all up in the truck, including Oscar, and drove out to a dark road in town so we could see a rare Dance of the Planets.  Just on top of the mountains, at sunset, we were able to see Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter in a triangle.  It was AWESOME!!!

The good times continued yesterday.  We went to our ward's Memorial Day pancake breakfast--there was a great turnout!  I loved the picture of me and Rhiannon with my friend Vilma--thanks to the Parkers for taking it!  Rhiannon looks so tall here, ha-ha! :)

Our friends Howard and Sandi had us over for dinner that night--we loved the food and enjoyed catching up with them!  Sandi made a wonderful meal of grilled pork loin, potato salad, toasted bread, and green beans.  It was delish!!!

I also wanted to thank my brother Logan for making the following available to me, a citation to Owen Sheen, my grandpa Max's brother who died in WWII:

AWARDS AND CITATIONS

Silver Star

Awarded for actions during the World War II

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Owen C. Sheen (MCSN: 338605), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Rifle Squad, serving with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 3 March 1945. With his squad pinned down by shattering small-arms fire emanating from two well-concealed hostile pillboxes, Corporal Sheen voluntarily pressed forward against the withering barrage to conduct a lone reconnaissance and, after locating the emplacements, returned to organize an attack. Boldly charging ahead of his squad, he led an aggressive strike against the strong point, personally destroying the initial pillbox with his accurately placed grenades before he was fatally struck down while assisting in the destruction of the other. By his superb leadership, valiant fighting spirit and cool courage maintained in the face of tremendous odds, Corporal Sheen contributed materially to the success of the bitterly fought Iwo campaign and his zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Field trips, Pinewood Derby, and more!

Some pictures to commemorate April.  It's been a very busy month so far, and we're only a third of the way through it!  Still to come--Jason's 3rd Ragnar race in Southern CA and my "girls weekend" with Grandma Deb, Aunt Heather, and Aunt Jaymie!

Most of the MiaMaids I have the pleasure of working with (we were missing 3 that night.)
We did a scavenger hunt in teams and had a good time that night!

Pinewood Derby 2013.  Wade and his dad made a really cool Batmobile car this year.
Wade didn't place, but he liked the "Best in Show" certificate that he got!

Some pics from the 3rd Grade Field Trip to see Pioneer Village in Bakersfield.
I only had two boys in my group--Wade and Johnny--and they were GREAT!

Rhiannon's History Fair project--she put a LOT more effort into this year's project than she did last year! :)

Renaissance Faire with Rhiannon and friends!  We survived and had a great time!

Highlights from the week--March is here!

Jason has made some major improvements to our landscaping the past two weekends.  He rented a stump grinder and borrowed a chain saw and took out both palo verde trees and ALL the oleanders.  Our yard looks different, but good. The next day we got half a pick-up truck of dried horse manure for our garden areas, and then today Jason ground all that in with a rototiller.  The kids will get to help me plant the garden areas over Spring Break--I can't wait to see how it grows this year!

(As I type this, Jason is running around upstairs chasing Oscar and teasing Rhiannon about his box of Girl Scout cookies that he doesn't plan on sharing.  I wish I could video tape it, but I'd be DEAD MEAT if I did. :))

Rhiannon had a busy week with an exciting band trip on Thursday and a science convention today.

(Mwa-ha-ha, RC is taking over now.)
My band trip was AMAZING. It wasn't a for-fun trip though. My school's concert orchestra and concert band, which includes moi, went to Phelan. It was a four hour drive altogether, two hours there and back, so everyone rode on the bus. You'd think it would be complete torture with 60+ kids on the bus, but it was fun. I sat next to my F-R-I-E-N-D (Dad teases me about him being my boyfriend) Jacob who I've known since 1st grade. We played Angry Birds Star Wars on my ipod and that was fun. When we got there, a high school girl "escort" took us to the instrument storage room. (I tried not to laugh at all the guys, because their jaws were on the ground when they saw the pretty high schooler. It was pretty funny: )  So we put our instruments away, and went in to watch a performance. Everyone was like whoop-de-doo, because we just wanted to play, but the performance was really good! It was this high school band from somewhere in California, and it was like watching a performance by Hans Zimmer or something. The high schoolers finished, and it was time for us to warm up in this room. Or so we thought. We stood outside for 30 minutes in the 40 degree weather without jackets. That sucked because when instruments are too cold, they get out of tune really bad. I think that was one of the things that affected our peformance. After the other people got out (FINALLY)  we went in and warmed up even though we were WAY OFF KEY. After warm up time we went onto the gigantic stage. We percussionists set up but we realized something--WE DIDNT HAVE ANY CYMBALS!!

Cymbals are crucial for most of our songs...But we had to play anyway. Everyone played the songs like they were supposed to, but the judges at festival gave us a "Good." Good means we got a C, which sucks. But we tried our best!  Everyone was kind of bummed, but we did okay.  So there's my band recap--yayzers! : ) Kay, Mom's back now...

Thanks, Rhiannon!  She was gone most of the day today at an Expanding Your Horizons science conference with other local 6th through 8th grade girls.  Rhiannon said her classes were amazing--Eye in the Sky was her favorite, where she learned about military tactics and satellite imaging.  Her other classes were on DNA and electric circuits.  The girls had pizza for lunch and enjoyed some neat guest speakers.  I think it's an amazing program--I wish I'd been able to participate in something like that when I was her age!

Wade has had a great week.  This weekend he just finished up the final objectives for 5th grade math.  I have to remind myself he's in 3rd grade--we're so glad he's able to do challenging things and have fun at school!

We were really proud of Wade today, too.  At the Opening Day ceremonies for baseball this morning, they asked coaches to pick one player from their team to be in a photo-op with some sponsors from the city.  Wade was excited when he got chosen out of the 12 boys to represent his team--and WE were excited to learn why his coaches chose him.  Apparently he'd been the only kid on the team "with discipline" during the ceremonies, who wasn't messing around.  That earned Wade some big smiles from his parents, AND he got lunch with his dad, too.

Right now Wade is outside somewhere playing with friends in the neighborhood, a group of 6 or 7 good boys.  I guess I should go round him up for dinner soon, but I have no idea whose house he's at, and it's nice not worrying about that fact one bit!  I'm lazy and usually send Rhiannon outside to chase him down for me. :)

I think the only "downer" today was that all baseball games got cancelled because of the rain we got yesterday.  It was an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS day for baseball, but the fields were a mess!

My week sped by.  I volunteered a lot at Wade's school this week helping with the book fair, and then I subbed on Friday.  It rained all day long, which is a cause for celebration here in the desert!  The only bad thing was the room I was in had a major water leak dripping from the ceiling.  Water leaks + second graders make for a bit of crazy drama and excitement, but eventually the kids settled down and we had a good day.

Is this post done yet? :)  My fingers hurt! :)

Learning something new

It took us a few days to recuperate from our wonderfully long weekend last week, and, now that we're recovered, another weekend is upon us!  Woo-hoo!  This weekend will be loaded with baseball, ensemble piano recitals for the kids, a Ragnar meeting for Dad (gearing up for SoCal in April), and a busy day at church on Sunday.  Somehow we'll find a way to carve in some down-time, too.  That's how we roll--downtime helps us stay sane!

On Monday night Howard and Sandi treated us to a great dinner at China Express; I'm STILL working on my orange chicken leftovers and loving every bite of it--thanks, guys!

Yesterday there was some "excitement" on base.  The kids both got to do live lockdowns at their schools because some idiot sped on through one of the base entrances without stopping and getting ID checked.  I felt really bad for Wade's school--apparently they were last to get the message that everything was clear and ended up being stuck in their classrooms, under their desks most of the time, for close to two hours.  Rhiannon said they were released much sooner than that at the middle school.  I guess you could look at this two ways.  One, I'm grateful for the precautions that were taken and the schools got some good practice.  Two, having schools on base can be/is annoying!

Last night we were all over the place for baseball practice and Mutual/Scouts activities.  Wade was at baseball, Jason was doing Scouts, and Rhiannon was making cookies with the Beehives (for me and the other YW leaders--so sweet!)  I had a TOTAL blast and learned something new at our activity--we met at our MiaMaid advisor's home, Sister Rivera, and she had gone to a great deal of trouble to set up this fun craft for the girls.  They printed inspirational signs on BURLAP with her home computer, then glued them to wooden boards that she'd painted ahead of time and made fabric flowers to glue to the boards, too.  I was super impressed--watch out, extended family, you might get some burlap awesomeness for Christmas this year to go along with your photo coasters, ha-ha! :)  Click on the picture for a pretty good tutorial on how to print on the burlap.

Update on the week

It's hard to believe the weekend is here already!  This week has F-L-O-W-N by for us!

Jason finished up his birthday celebrations and then had a business trip to Tucson Tuesday through Thursday.

Rhiannon had a band trip on Wednesday and travelled to three different local elementary schools to do concerts for 4th and 5th graders.  Luckily for me, I was subbing for a 5th grade class that day and got to see the band perform--it was fun!  I love it when things work out that way.

Wade will finish up the flag football season this weekend.  He's had opportunity to show good sportsmanship on his Vikings team.  They're a younger, less-experienced team in this new division, and they've only won a single game so far, but they've come close on others.  I'm proud of Wade for playing hard every game, no matter what, often against kids MUCH bigger and older!  It's hard to keep going sometimes when you look at the scoreboard, but I think there are a lot of life lessons to learn, too.  Coach Nick and Coach Kevin are great guys who've taught Wade new skills and plays.  And, after a pep talk from his dad early in the season (I think Jason's exact words were, "Wade, all I want for Christmas is for you to get a flag!"), Wade started to grab some flags, too!  YAY! :)

Bring on the weekend!

2 trips to the vet this week, for starters

This week was one of those "blacked out" kind of weeks, where you look at the family calendar hanging in the kitchen and can't find space to write anything else.  It had its fair share of drama, too.

Monday:
Wade stayed home from school.  He'd been sick the day before but seemed fine the next day.  (I'm starting to wonder if he accidentally ate something with peanuts, though he won't own up to it.)  That afternoon he had an orthodontic appointment and got the thumbs up for doing a good job with his palate expander.  He's going to have that thing for several more months, but he's doing great with it.  He's excited to change the band color on his brackets at the next visit.  Right now he's sporting yellow.

Tuesday:
Rhiannon went on a field trip in the morning at a lab here on base and absolutely loved it.  She loved the chemistry lab and seeing different experiments.  (Ask her about the liquid nitrogen popcorn!)

I finally got Oscar into the vet that day after a week of his diarrhea--poor doggy, we just kept thinking it would clear up, but it turns out he had giardia, a water-born illness that is VERY common in Ridgecrest.  Came home with some medicine for him, and the very next day he was better, as though it had never happened.  Hurray!  The bad part is that he HATED being there at the vet and barked like crazy.  He doesn't have a yippy bark--when he's at the vet he has a cover-your-ears-and-hope-the-building-doesn't-come-crashing-down-on-us-earthquake bark.  At least, that's what it felt like to me!

Wednesday:
Drama Day.
I volunteered at both Rhiannon and Wade's schools that day, and then that afternoon the kids helped me give Oscar a bath, the first one since his neutering.  It was so fun, and he was such a happy, clean puppy!  10 minutes later was a different story.  Long story short, he found one of Rhiannon's anklet socks and swallowed it whole.  I didn't even know it was in his mouth until he went out to the middle of the yard, turned around and looked at me, and opened his mouth.  I guess he knew he was in trouble because he WOULD NOT come to us, no matter how we encouraged and enticed him.

By the time we caught him, the sock was gone.  (An overnight visit to the vet, more earthquake barking, lots of tears, x-rays, catheter, IVs, and $500 later, I picked him up from the vet the next day and no sock had shown up yet.)  I called Jason to ask for his help getting Wade to his baseball scrimmage, and then Oscar and I hung out at the vet for a few hours.  Wade did well at his game, and we survived the cold, too.  It was weird and depressing to come home though after the game to a quiet house and no tail wagging--we all felt really bad and scared for Oscar.

Thursday:
Went visiting teaching in the morning and picked up Oscar in the afternoon.  Still no sock.  They'd tried to fill him with fluids to help him pass it, with no luck.  I asked to take him home, and they said to watch for vomiting or diarrhea and to bring him back asap if that happened.  Oscar has a nice bare patch on one of his front legs from where they shaved him for the IV, but otherwise he was jumping and happy and completely oblivious to the horror and sadness he'd caused his owners!  The vet techs guessed that he was barking so badly because he was being protective of me--they said he'd calmed down and had been a dream patient for them, thank goodness!  I took him home, threw some pillows on the floor, and took a long nap with the puppy--we were both worn out.  That night Jason played raquetball with the young men from church, Rhiannon learned some first aid in preparation for Girls Camp this summer, and Wade and I stood outside in the dark for 90 minutes waiting for his baseball team pictures to get taken.  It was a weird set-up, but the weather was nice!

Friday:
I helped out at Wade's school book fair for a bit.  That afternoon Oscar and I were running around in the yard when all of a sudden he froze, bent over, and threw up the sock!  I think that's got to be the weirdest thing in my whole life to see, and weirder still that I was so happy about it!  Check out this news story about another dog with a laundry problem.  It's something I came across when I was scouring the Internet with worry:

Turns out it wasn't a tumor after all...

That night we all sat back and put our feet up.  We needed it!

Saturday:

Today we all

Rhiannon went to her Expanding Your Horizons science/math conference at 8am.  She got a t-shirt, a fun bag, made interesting projects, and enjoyed being with friends.  She says she will DEFINITELY do it again next year!  Ask her about the forensics class and others she went to!

After that Wade and I went to his baseball Opening Day festivities, then home again so I could quickly change and go to our stake Women's Conference.  The theme was President Uchtdorf's Forget-Me-Not talk, and I loved every minute of it.  The last class was my favorite, on being happy.  The presenter, one of my favorite people Sister Foster, asked everyone to close their eyes and think of something that made them happy today or yesterday.  I raised my hand and said in a loud voice, "I had a rough week with our puppy.  He swallowed a sock, and yesterday it finally issued forth!"  That got a pretty good laugh from the whole room.   Sister Foster made the point that if you think you're supposed to be happy all the time, you're delusional.  But you do need to find things to be happy about!  She shared a wonderful quote that we all appreciated:

How awesome is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After the conference I raced home again, changed, and joined Jason at Wade's first official baseball game of the season.  His Red Sox team won, thanks to Wade's game-winning run!  His hitting was awesome, definitely a huge improvement already from last year.

That night Jason had about 10 young men over for another pizza/planning/Playstation 3 evening.  The boys were great--it's nice having a house full of young men who are fun, funny, and well-mannered!  Oh, and Oscar LOVED having that many people in the house!  He hardly made a peep and loved walking around sniffing everybody, tail wagging!  The boys were good sports about it!

Sorry for the long post, but it's been a long week!  This upcoming week will include 2 sub jobs, more baseball, a barbecue with our new neighbors, and preparation for our Spring Break getaway to Utah.  Hope everyone has a great week, too!

4 minutes faster

Yesterday we left the house before 5am and drove to Death Valley for Jason's 2nd 10K race.  He shaved 4 minutes off his time from last year--
way to go, babe!

Rhiannon and Wade are in the foreground, waiting to greet Dad after the race!

I'm glad we brought the kids--we had a fun time together and it was a good thing for them to see their dad cross the finish line!  Maybe next year we'll come over early and make a camping trip out of it, too.  Death Valley is AMAZING this time of year--the weather was perfect.

It was nice to see that Oscar the puppy had survived our absence well.  He didn't leave TOO big of a mess for us to clean up in his ex-pen and was sure happy to see us when we walked in the door! :)

Nothing too terribly involved or exciting going on this coming week.  Ward council, home teaching, and Sharing Time lesson today.  Maybe a little football watching tonight.  (Go, Giants!)  Jason will be gone 3 days to Baltimore. One more round of shots for Oscar at the vet.  The usual piano/Cub Scouts/Activity Days on Thursday.  The weekend should be fun for Jason and me--couples Game Night on Friday and a ward activity for adults on Saturday...the Sweetheart Dinner and Dance.   Anytime in-between I hope to work on blog books!  I finished one blog book for 2010 this week and have given myself a deadline to finish one for 2011 by February 26th so that I can take advantage of a discount thru Blurb.  Otherwise, I'd be paying $75 plus for one book, and I really don't want to do that, no matter how awesome the book is! :)

Happy Birthday to Aunt Chris tomorrow, too--we love you!

Noise putty

As I'm typing this, Wade is having a good ol' time making disgusting noises with his "noise putty."  All kinds of adjectives come to mind--oh the joys of being a boy!

Wade's report:  "My week was (insert sound effect with noise putty) okay!  Mom took my Nintendo DS away** (which I really like and play with ALL THE TIME) just because my AR test percentage was a little bit below 85%.   I have to raise my percentage to 90% to get it back, and then I'm going to play my new DS game called Iron Man which is rated E 10+.  Hee-hee-hee-hee, and I'm only 8.  At Cub Scouts on Thursday I totally hurt my back trying to do a front roll or somersault.  Nobody laughed, which was cool, boo-yah. (insert noise putty sound effect).  Today we're going to go get some new shoes because my old ones are falling apart, and I might get another Nerf Gun called the Nite Finder (I still have Christmas money left)."

**Mom's note:  I'm doing an experiment to see if Wade's test scores will improve if he spends less time glued to his DS.   We're also going to read aloud more at home, besides just family scripture study.   It's not a major cause for concern, but his teacher and I both know he can do better with those darn comprehension/memory tests. :)  Any other ideas would be appreciated--the L-A-S-T thing I want to do is fight with Wade over reading, ya know?  This is one of the few issues I have with the normally fantastic Accelerated Reader program--I've seen it make a world of difference for those kids who are struggling with reading, but I've also seen it drain every last bit of joy out of advanced readers (which I'm worried about for Wade).  I should also mention that he's REALLY good at math--we just need to find the right balance and definitely make reading fun at home, too.  Sorry for the soapbox rant...

Rhiannon's report:  "This week was tiring--I had finals on Thursday and Friday.  My PE final was ultra hard and apparently I got a D for running a mile and a half in 11 minutes and 50 seconds.  Can you believe that?  Mom and Dad were okay with my effort--we'll just see how it affects my final grade.  My band teacher said we're now Intermediate Band instead of beginners, :), and we're working on this REALLY cool train song for the concert in March.  I ordered some cool feather extensions for my hair, which I love (they're THE THING at my school). lolz (Yes! Mom went to the bathroom.....I shall now take over blog post*maniacal laugh: D*) Oscar and me had a nice nap together yesterday. I was spazzed out on the floor, and he decided to come and join me. It was pretty cute. (Oscar snores too: )
So, yeah, on finals, I'm pretty sure I did pretty well, except... after PE finals, my brain wasn't working. I'm kind've worried about English, I mean I tried my best.....(did I mention none of the kids in my period could walk in a straight line after PE?) Mom's back.........ta-ta for now.**

**Mom's note:  I'm so proud of Rhiannon for finishing up her science fair project, too--she worked really hard on it and turned it in on Wednesday.  We were ALL ready for a relaxing weekend after "interviewing" 18 dogs for her project last Friday and Saturday!  She was also a big help to me on Thursday--I subbed in Wade's class and Rhiannon watched Oscar for 3 hours while I was gone (she had a minimum day schedule and got home early).

This week I attended a Relief Society meeting focused on capturing our family and personal histories. It was very inspiring. The gals who presented did a great job and had a TON of information. Basically, there's no wrong way to do it, as long as you're doing something!!! I plan on using some of their cute blog ideas/lists as soon as I can.  In other news, I feel like time is speeding up on me--this week was SO FAST!

Jason is shooting for a 5-mile run this morning--he's doing so great with all of the exercise and healthy eating.  I appreciate his example!  On Thursday night the young men he works with at church came over to play video games--I think they all had a pretty good time!  He'll have some work travel next week and then when he gets home he'll head off to Death Valley for a Scout campout--I guess that's one fun way to celebrate a birthday!
