I had to laugh at myself this afternoon. I've made 3 homemade green smoothies over the past 2 days and....2 of them were awesome! The most recent try was a super-fail, though.
Tasty:
1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup of Greek yogurt (vanilla or strawberry were on hand)
Large handful of washed kale and spinach from our garden
1-2 cups of frozen fruit (banana, mango, and apricot have been great!)
NOT so great--tasted like I was drinking a bitter veggie salad! I think the main culprit was the added lettuce and the absence of orange juice. It was awful:
1/2 cup water
Handful of oats
Handful of kale, spinach, and leaf lettuce from the garden
1-2 cups of frozen apricot and mango
Dash of milk from the fridge
Lesson learned: If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Time to stock up on OJ, frozen fruit, and Greek yogurt. :)

We mowed the lawn. And it was fun!
I woke up this morning thinking about captured moments and "deliberate motherhood." I had a moment like that yesterday but didn't realize that's what it was until today.
Yesterday the kids and I were draggggg-ing after school. I looked out the kitchen window and decided I'd had enough of the jungle of grass in the backyard and asked the kids to come help me mow the lawn quickly. "I'll do most of it!" I promised.
It was an absolutely gorgeous day--the wind had stopped, the temperature was perfect, and it just felt so nice outside! Wade did the first couple passes because us girls are freaked out by sprinkler heads, ha-ha, but we all helped and had a good time doing it. The grass was so high that we had to empty the bag on the mower 3 different times. (That's a lot.)
The funny thing were the tufts of grass all over after we were done that can really only be reached by the weed-eater...which all three of us were wary of using, ha-ha!
It was a great moment. The weather won us over and we all hung out watching each other mow the lawn. And NOT ONCE did those tired teens complain about taking a break to mow the lawn! They were having as much fun as I was. Win-win!

Friends = family you get to choose.
On Saturday our wonderful friends Howard and Sandi Collins said goodbye to California and started on the road for their new home in South Dakota. Their home here sat on the market for quite a while, but things moved VERY quickly once it sold, and all of a sudden we were bidding farewell to friends we've known for 17 years so far. Jason has reminded all of us: it's not goodbye, it's "see you later," and I've held on to that wisdom when I start feeling down about the change.
Howard and Sandi are adopted family. Before they left I made copies for them of all the pictures I could find on my computer of them with us and our kids. There were over 80 photos that together told a marvelous story of a couple who embraced our kids and supported their achievements, milestones, activities, recitals, and birthdays. We celebrated holidays together, had barbecues and swim parties. Howard and Sandi came to stay with us when we were living on the East Coast. They gave Wade a steady, weekly job for almost two years. We could be ourselves and talk freely with them.
I hope they know how much we love them and appreciate them! Their friendship and kindness has filled a major void for us, living so far away from other family members--we are so grateful for them!
We love you, Howard and Sandi!
