Big things in January

Some big highlights for January 2019:

On Jason's birthday, a Sunday, we made a family trip to take Rhiannon back to Reno for school.  There was a bit of dicey weather, but Jason got us there safely and in great time.  We enjoyed a tasty, pricey buffet at the casino we were staying at, and then in the morning we got breakfast at IHOP and dropped Rhiannon off at her dorm.  It was fun and fast!  We loved having Rhiannon home for a whole month and pray she'll enjoy this next semester to the fullest.

The kids bought Jason a book of Rush bass tabs and a Darth Vader key chain--he loved them!

Wade had two major milestones in January, too--he became a Priest in the Aaronic priesthood and blessed the sacrament for the past two Sundays.  And last week he got his patriarchal blessing, which was an amazing, awesome experience!  Proud of this boy!

Some good men participated in Wade's ordination:  Brit Farley, Jason Record, David Foster, Rodney Allen, Jason, Lee Cox, and Scott Hawkins.  We are grateful for these men who are key members of our "village!"

Christmas 2017--Vacation/Stay-cation

Today is Day 9 of our Christmas break and we are really enjoying it.  Some highlights so far include:

seeing the Last Jedi movie in 3D
playing games with the Littons
ordering our traditional Golden Dragon take-out
eating delicious soup and rolls with the Zobells
enjoying a 1-hr musical sacrament meeting on Christmas Eve Day (Rhiannon did a beautiful job playing a piano solo for that)
driving around town to see Christmas lights
lots of family phone calls and video FaceTimes
a lovely, peaceful relaxing Christmas Day
doing a few household tasks like decluttering and raking leaves
watched Dunkirk
devoured a tasty Christmas ham and mashed potatoes dinner
a bit of golfing for the boys
having fun with our new phones!
making Amazon wish lists

Earlier this week Jason and Wade drove up to northern California for Wade's belated birthday gift to see a Warriors basketball game!  They drove up, saw the game, stayed the night, ate good food, and checked out a cool museum on the way home, too.  They had a great time!

Rhiannon and I enjoyed our own stay-cation while the boys were gone--we shopped, got haircuts, watched recorded This is Us episodes, slept in, ate dinner at Subway with the sister missionaries, and went to the movie theater to see The Greatest Showman.

We made a list of a few more things we need/want to do.  It's so nice to realize we have several more days together to play, sleep, party, rest, and plan for 2018!

Our epic Summer 2017 trip. Part 1: Cushing and Cropper time!

Two weeks of school have come and gone already.  Rhiannon is off to play in the band at the high school's first football game tonight--the first one of her SENIOR year!  Wade is taking it easy, playing his new video game and going to bed early tonight so he can do well at a fun run tomorrow morning.  Jason and I enjoyed having the day off and both were glad to have some time to unwind/get things done.

So tonight felt like a good time to rewind and capture some fun summer moments that I've been meaning to get on the blog for weeks.  Here's the first of several--our family trip to see Cushing/Cropper family in Salt Lake City, then on to Bear Lake for the Rich and Donna Sheen Family Reunion, followed by a quick Idaho trip for the Beck reunion and time with Uncle Max.  We had a good time!

We packed a lot of fun in with the UT Cushings and Croppers!  Highlights included:

Water balloon games and dessert outside in the backyard--it was such a beautiful night!
Watching Matt, Lilly, and Heather perform a musical number in sacrament meeting
Watching the Wonder Woman movie with Grandma Deb
Playing lots and lots of games with cousins
Bowling and pizza with everyone!
Staying up to watch the Warriors win the NBA Finals--thanks, Grandpa!
Watching DVR'ed shows with Grandpa and Grandma
Checking out the largest Costco ever

I didn't take many pictures this trip, but here are a fun few from the Salt Lake City days (plus check out the hilarious Snapchat ones that Heather shared with us! Too funny!)

A very memorable family temple trip

Memorial Day weekend was a special one for us.

That Friday afternoon we drove down to the Los Angeles temple, stopped for dinner at In 'N Out on the way and stayed the night in the temple patron apartments for the first time.  Many of our friends make family trips this way and said the temple apartments were the way to go--they were right.  The apartment was simply furnished and a little snug, but it was inexpensive, clean, and had a great shower.  We smiled at the giant picture of the Savior in the kitchenette and the Family Proclamation posted in the apartment complex elevator.  It was peaceful and perfect.

The next morning we woke up very early and started in the temple baptistry at 6 am.  It was the first time we had family names to do work for, that Jason and I had found on our own.  (Next step:  encourage the kids in this endeavor!)

After some time there, the kids went back to the apartment, and then Jason and I did initiatories and then an endowment session together, followed by several sealings.  We both agreed it was a neat experience to do that--we hadn't done initiatories and sealings in a very long time.  Rhiannon and Wade said they had a fun time together, too, hanging out in the apartment, walking the temple grounds, taking pictures, and checking out the visitor's center.

We were all finished before noon!  And our family was able to do temple ordinance work of some sort for 13 family names (plus several more in the baptistry and sealing room).  It was a lovely day, finished off with a pleasant drive home and lunch at El Torito in Palmdale.

Will we do it again?  Yes!

I've had a goal for a really long time to personally find a family name to take to the temple.  We're talking years.  Each year would go by and I'd say, "Well, maybe next year."  Over the past few months things came together for me--I felt urged on at some stake meetings, there was an article in the Ensign magazine about what to do if all your family history work seems "done," and a cute Laurel in our ward also gave me some hints.  So one day in February I just started clicking around and there it was.

That one name.  Martha Handford.  With only one single temple ordinance left, to be sealed to her parents.  Jason was also very successful that morning--I was encouraged to give it a try after he'd found several names in a matter of minutes.

I was pretty excited when I found that name.  Really, I was more than excited--I felt a jolt of electricity and happiness when I found it!  But that feeling was nothing compared to how it felt to be in the temple a few months later completing the work for Martha Handford.  It was a powerful, exhilarating, and emotional moment.  I felt profoundly happy and honored to be there for her, to do the work with Jason, and thankful to the other people in the sealing room helping us make it happen.

It was awesome.
