Yesterday was a busy, fun day.
--Wade attended an engineering conference for boys on base. He said his favorite station was "Outbreak," where his group played a board game called Pandemic and had to figure out how to end epidemics quickly. "We had to use a lot of strategy!" he said.
--Jason got away to work for a couple hours and had some time to himself to get things done. That's hard to do during the work week when his office seems to have a revolving door and people in and out all the time!
--Rhiannon finished up a night with friends at her friend Izzy's house. She said she got about 6 hours of sleep, as opposed to other friends that night who only got three. Izzy is moving to Arizona next week, and she will be missed! Rhiannon drove us home afterwards (she now has 9 hours under her belt of driving time...we really need to step up our game if she needs to get 56!)
--I walked the dogs for three miles and then came home and did yard work for 2 hours. Yes, I am very sore today, but I feel like I can concentrate better with the yard cleaned up (the garden areas were full of weeds and needed some help). Rhiannon was a HUGE help, too--she mowed the lawn for me, trimmed up some bushes, and did some pool maintenance.
--Jason and Rhiannon drove out to Inyokern and back. He said she did pretty well but starts braking way earlier than she needs to.
--After chores Wade played some basketball with neighbor friends and then played some video games with his friend Nick next door.
--I made pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. The ingredients had been out on the counter for two days...and I finally fixed that!
--And finally, our family donned a bit of pirate gear and went to the Chairez home for a "Talk Like a Pirate Day" party that night. I appreciated Jason, Rhiannon, and Wade coming and being good sports, because they didn't know too many people. Most of the families there were old MOMS club friends, so the moms knew my family, but my family didn't know them. It was fun to catch up a bit with the Chairezes, too, who had recently moved back after living in Virginia for 5 years.
Lately I find myself wondering if time is going to slow down and when we get to take a rest and do nothing, haha! But this weekend was still pretty good for that. We had a nice mix of work and play!

Today
Today's cloudy sunrise was glorious.
That beautiful sky helped me forget, for just a few moments, about our local weather. Uncomfortable would be an understatement. I melted into a puddle yesterday and plan to live in the pool during the next 7 days. It's pretty awesome until 10 or 11 am, and then...it's not.
Today Jason is on the China Lake golf course, participating in a tournament with folks from his new work group. He and others are doing some good things to promote unity and community with co-workers. A few months back they had a low-key family barbecue and I mentioned to someone there that I was looking forward to the work Christmas party. "Christmas party? We haven't had one of those in years!"--was the response. Jason is working on issues like this along with all the other million trillion things he has to do. It's been a busy week with testing and out-of-town guests and retirement party mc-ing. I'm glad he can relieve some stress today!!!
Today Rhiannon has 3 quizzes at school, but she gets a break from Friday night football and doesn't have to be up late playing in the band. She enjoys doing that, but it's nice to have a free weekend every once in a while, too! I'm looking forward to some quality mother-daughter time tomorrow when we go to the General Womens' broadcast. For fun Rhiannon de-stresses with music, texts back and forth with friends, rocks out on the piano, and daydreams about Halloween costumes. I believe she and her friend JenAi are going with a Star Wars theme this year...
Today Wade is going to a birthday/slumber party next door for his best friend Nick. He has been looking forward to this for several days. Middle school is treating him well, too. He's getting used to moving around and being responsible for several different classes. Band practice and piano practice at home are rarely missed--yay! Oh, and he will start braces back up in a few weeks--he got molds taken again on Wednesday. The dentist office gave him a break for the past few months while he lost SEVERAL baby teeth.
Today I recuperated from yesterday. Thursday I woke up feeling yucky. I didn't know if I was sick or just all kinds of nervous about subbing at a new school that day. I asked Jason for a priesthood blessing and that helped so much. Still, it was a long, hot day subbing for that first grade class. I got lots of hugs and little "I love you, Mrs. C" notes, which I loved, loved, loved. But a large group of first graders takes its toll no matter how hard you try to keep up. I felt like I'd been hit by a bus!
We will enjoy this last September weekend as much as possible!

Some big "firsts" today
It's been a happy, busy Saturday!
Jason and I got our P90X3 workouts in.
I took the dogs for a good walk.
Wade (with a little help from Mom) got his science project board completed.
We went to Game Stop and cashed in a gift card from the Round Rock Sheens (thanks, guys!!!!!!!!!!!)!
Rhiannon had a blast at her second-to-last volleyball clinic class. She said they worked on a lot of defensive moves today. She'll be sad when the class ends next week and asked me if we could get a volleyball so she could practice some of the things she's learned in the backyard. :) I love that she's having a good time with it. Besides tennis and swim lessons and one season of soccer, she hasn't tried anything else "sporty". She said she could definitely see herself wanting to do volleyball again--here in town they offer this particular clinic to kids all the way up to age 19--yay!
Wade scored his first-ever touchdown in his team's flag football game this afternoon. It was a pretty exciting moment, the first time he's done that since he started playing flag football a few years ago. We'd never seen him run that fast, ha-ha! We asked him how he felt when he got the ball in his hands, and he said, "I felt like I was on steroids!" Adrenal kicked in and got him to the goal line!
And then tonight the kids joined me in the kitchen for their first official "Cooking with Mom" lesson of the year. Last year I failed in my goal to teach them 12 meals. This year I said we'd do 6, and we got off to a great start tonight. For the first time ever, both kids cut up raw chicken (and survived). They read the recipe, got all the ingredients prepped, and then made the meal with very little help from me. They learned 3 cooking tips: be safe, be clean, and always get your ingredients together before you start (so that you know you have everything!) It was cool, and the "Angel Hair Pasta with Chicken, Broccoli, and Carrots" was tasty! Good job, kids!
For their reward, I told them I'd take care of kitchen clean-up for the night.
Which is why I'm procrastinating and blogging right now, HA! :)

96?!
96. That's how many blog posts I need by the end of the year to match the number I did in 2012. It's not going to happen, and that's okay!
Looking back over this year, I was trying to think about what was happening in March-April-May for there to be so few blog posts. There were some exciting things going on (big cruise, Ragnar for Jason, baseball, end of school, among other things), but I think the underlying reason was my preoccupation with that possible Florida move! I was certainly spending a lot of time searching on the Internet instead of blogging.
This weekend:
--Wade earned his Cub Scouts Bear award and Religious Knot. Woo-hoo! (that's a 2013 goal completed!)
--Rhiannon and Wade helped me and some other families with our church meetinghouse cleaning assignment. Jason was at home overseeing the installation of something cool in our backyard (see next item in the list)
--We enjoyed our new hot tub. Our old one died and looked bad, too. This new one is refurbished, much larger and nicer. Bring on winter!
--Jason and Rhiannon drove down to the Los Angeles temple for a youth baptism trip.
--Wade helped me plant a fall garden. (crossing our fingers for radishes, cilantro, kale, spinach, and peas!)
--Wade and I went to McD's for lunch, and he hung out with some friends in the afternoon, doing everything from football to cup-stacking (yes, Google Speed Stacks and you'll learn what Richmond Elementary kids are INTO this year)
--I spent some time prepping for Wade's 10th birthday party next month (Iron Man 3). I'm also done with Halloween costumes. (Wade got an Iron Man 3 suit and Rhiannon got a Dr. Who sonic screwdriver....)
Happy Weekend!

Labor Day weekend is here!
Boy, are the CA Cushings ready for this weekend. Besides a ward breakfast on Monday, there is nothing written on the calendar. Here's what we've been up to this week and WILL be doing this weekend:
Jason--had a busy week at work with an "off-site, on-site" activity with his team. I jokingly asked him if they were going to do trust-building exercises, and he said, "Yeah." We went down to Costco on Monday night (1.5 hours away) and picked up food for the event, and then on Tuesday night Jason invited me to join him for a social and dinner at the local USO building (fun!). They concluded the activities on Wednesday. He enjoyed his first official flex Friday yesterday since the furloughs have ended and spent most of the day setting up our new computer upstairs and the many things involved with that (thanks, babe!) Jason's weekend plans include just 3 things--training for his 1/2 marathon, doing some yard work, and swimming!
Rhiannon--says she's been really tired and needed this weekend to "sleep in." I don't blame her! We're what, two and a half weeks into school and we're not quite used to it yet! She's enjoying school, it's just a long day for her, getting up at 5:15am every day of the school week. (You can tell she's been busy because she hasn't been on Facebook too much, ha-ha!) Here's some of what she's been studying already:
PE--volleyball
US history--Native American tribes and then European explorers
Honors English--Flowers for Algernon (book) and written essays on an autobiographical event (she chose to write about our move to Virginia)
Band--first concert is next week; she loves being able to teach the boys in her percussion group different mallet pieces
Algebra--well, algebra!
Yearbook--her class is learning about making layouts on a website, and they're also studying the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. She really likes that book and asked if she could get her own copy! It came in the mail last week. :)
Science--not sure, but they've already done a lab to make sparklers, and she really likes the teacher!
Then there's piano lessons and Mutual night activities to round things out. This week for Mutual, the boys and girls got together and did an Iron Chef activity, dessert-style. Rhiannon said it was awesome!
We're proud of this 8th grader and hope she'll get that catch-up rest she deserves. Her plans for the weekend include sleeping in, finishing up chores, playing the piano, reading, and getting to the library!
Wade--has been working very, very hard on extra money chores to earn his part for his new iPod that came this week. On top of his regular stuff that needs done, he's cleaned all the showers in the house, super-dusted the nooks and crannies of the dining room table set and helped me dust the pictures and shelves above the stairs (really needed done!), and emptied the fridge and wiped it clean. Today he plans to "get up early" and get his last thing done--turning over the dirt in the garden. It stinks that his iPod screen broke in the first place, but we're proud of Wade for working hard to correct things and help earn his half for a replacement.
Wade seemed pretty happy about having me for a sub this week, too. I subbed in his class on Thursday, and it was a really great day--the class was fantastic and the day flew by! It made me so happy to see him excited to have his old ma at school. I've got to take advantage of that while I can, ha-ha!
Also this week Wade read the books Hoot and Flush. He got out his Origami Yoda books and has been folding little Yodas and light sabers all over the place. He went to Cub Scouts and worked on a geography belt loop, too. I think his weekend wishes are: swimming! TV! computer games and searching! library! and new iPod!
Me?--I enjoyed getting two "dates" in with Jason earlier in the week. It was fun going down to Costco and getting In and Out for dinner, and then I got spoiled with another "date" the following night. I did two sub jobs this week on Tuesday and Thursday, and I helped with Webelos Cub Scouts on Thursday night. That wasn't my favorite thing--I LOVE that calling and I LOVE working with those boys, but there was something in the air that night and they were CRAZY! They must need this Labor Day weekend, too, because my co-leader and I struggled to keep their attention the entire hour. That's not usually the case!
I've been reading The Adopted Dog Bible (really good!), a young adult book called Scarlet (recommended by Rhiannon), and this super-fun kids' book called Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. It's like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but with books and a really cool library!
My plans for the weekend include dog walks, pulling weeds, swimming, groceries, library, reading, and ch-ch-chillin'!

Friday before school starts
So, what are we up to today, our last Friday before school starts?
Jason woke up early and went for a run. He finished P90X and is now training for a half-marathon in October.
We all worked on chores this morning.
Jason mowed the lawn and did some projects, such as replacing a sprinkler head that looked like it'd been chewed on (Oscar!), adding some chemicals to the waterfalls, and pounding in fertilizer spikes around some pine trees that weren't looking too hot.
I raked, swept, blew leaves into a pile, and removed tomato plants from the garden. (Got the shock of my life when I realized one of the plants was COVERED in caterpillars and jumpy cricket thing-a-ma-jigs. That's all I'm going to say about it, because if I keep talking about it, the tears and gag reflex will start up again. Note to self: do NOT let this happen again next time we do a garden! Pest control is coming at 3pm today!)
Wade pulled weeds and helped me outside with picking up the leaves. He helped Dad by cleaning up and sweeping out back. Then he watered the grapevine and flowers.
Rhiannon helped me sweep off the porch. She also used the steam mop for the first time and mopped the downstairs--she did a great job with that.
Right now Rhiannon is across the street babysitting three little boys. Wade is listening to his iPod and dreaming up ways he can earn money to replace the broken screen on it. (iPod dropped on tile floor is no bueno.) Jason got a haircut and is now enjoying some tasty Taco Bell and ESPN downstairs. I need a shower bad, so that's what I'm about to do!
Tonight we're going to all put our feet up, maybe swim, and enjoy a family movie night--Star Trek Wrath of Khan that Jason got for Father's Day. :)

What to do while Daddy's burning the pavement?
The kids and I won't be joining Jason for the race this weekend. As much as I'd love to be there to see his team cross the finish line, there were too many variables and I personally didn't want to add to Jason's stress so he could focus on running. He agreed--if it was just him, we'd BE THERE, but with 11 other people, juggling a 2-day, 200-mile race, it didn't seem like the right thing to do. Hopefully I won't regret the decision and will be able to experience the Ragnar finish "next time!"
Instead, we'll be checking the team's Facebook page constantly for updates. We'll go to Wade's baseball game on Saturday morning and then Rhiannon will go to a church activity. Somewhere in there, we may sit down and watch this, which came out on "BLU-RAY" this week:

Weekend!
It's been a nice week, with plenty to do and keep us busy. Other than the Oscar drama (see the Dog Dooty post), all is well.
Yesterday the students at Wade's school completed 750 Accelerated Reader tests for Dr. Seuss's birthday--translation: they read a LOT of books in one day!
I helped out in the school library for a couple of hours helping with the test-taking there. It was fun and went by fast! I also mingled with the flex Friday crowds and did a ton of grocery shopping and last-minute prepping for this morning's Primary activity.
Jason got together with a group of co-workers in the morning and shot guns. Later in the day he went for a run outside and got over 4 miles in--way to go, babe! Gotta love flex Friday!
In the evening, after Rhiannon got home from babysitting and I had finished making 3 batches of Wilton's Buttercream Icing (also for the Primary activity), we sat down for a family movie night and watched this:

Noise maker
It's been a good day so far. Wade had a friend over followed by baseball practice. Rhiannon has enjoyed time reading, relaxing, and computer-ing--she's going babysitting in a few minutes. I got a ton of laundry done and cleaned up the messy kitchen. Jason got home from the campout mid-afternoon--we had a good time watching Top Gear's "Big Rigs" episode with him. Oscar got not one but two walks and has been a pretty good boy today. He got a new toy from WalMart:

Rhiannon and Wade made noises with it the entire time we were shopping at WalMart--they were in love with it, too!

Think of the most annoying squeaky dog toy + oinks + Whoopie cushion and you've got the pig--Oscar growled at his at first, but quickly fell in love with it.

It's Thursday but it's Friday
I don't know if I've ever looked forward to a 4-day weekend as much as I have this Presidents' Day one! There's something about helping kids through sickness and dealing with crazy winds that just makes me want to pull the covers up over my head! Hopefully I'm not getting what Rhiannon had--I don't feel feverish, just run down and tired.
Last night Wade started baseball again. His practice was at 7pm for an hour, and he did really, really well! His 3 coaches are AWESOME and sure had the boys working hard. It was hard to believe it was a first practice--everyone was doing so well! Wade doesn't know a single kid on his team--it will be an excellent chance to widen his circle of friends. I was proud of him for getting out there and trying his best--his catching was good, and with some tips from his coaches, he had some great hits, too! For the next 3 weeks he'll have practices on Wednesday nights, Friday nights, and Saturday mornings. The Friday and Saturday practices will be longer.
The only downer for me was that after sitting on the bleachers watching Wade for an hour in the cold, I couldn't feel my face. Every part of me was COLD. As soon as we got home and said prayers, I jumped into bed with 3 layers of blankets, wearing my flannel pjs and cozy socks and still felt cold for almost 30 minutes. I guess it takes a while to thaw out.
Today Jason is taking me out for a lunch date (I am so spoiled! :)), then I'm subbing for two hours in the afternoon, followed by piano lessons, some sort of dinner, and Cub Scouts and Mutual.
Here are our weekend plans, so far:
Friday:
5am substitute paper route with Rhiannon
Wade and Jason will work on pinewood derby car
Jason has Scout campout
The kids and I--?? maybe pizza and a movie
Saturday:
SLEEP IN
Rhiannon babysitting in the evening
???--probably some shopping
Sunday:
SLEEP IN
Church
No extra meetings?
Monday:
Wade gets orthodontic appliance and dental cleaning in the morning
Both kids have been invited to birthday parties that afternoon
Yard work date with Jason? :)

Lazy Saturday morning
Here's what everyone's been up to this morning:
Jason is golfing with friends at the base golf course (it's been a long time!)

Wade is downstairs eating pretzels and watching the show "Family Game Night" on the Hub channel.

Rhiannon is downstairs on the computer, checking eBay for cute winter coats. Here are some examples (I'm going to call the one with ears an Ewok coat)
I am upstairs, letting everyone do whatever they want while I get a TON of Primary stuff done. I've created the Primary program outline and seating chart, sent emails, and made plans. It feels great to get those things done on my

list, especially since I've been putting it off and trying to avoid it!
Now we'll scrounge for some lunch, take showers, and see what else comes our way today!

Another weekend recap
Friday--bedroom clean out party; we took 3 big black garbage bags of stuff to the thrift store. That felt good. We also ordered some Pizza Hut for dinner online, and it was super tasty. Brought back good memories of doing the same thing in Virginia OFTEN, only with Papa Johns instead.
Saturday--Dad went to LA on a youth temple trip. The kids and I watched a lot of Psych and this cool movie called Amazing Grace. We went to a book store. And we took Wade to his 2nd baseball practice. It was 90 minutes and C-O-L-D, but it's so fun seeing the improvement from last year that the time goes by fast. Wade has amazed me by connecting several times with balls "thrown" from the pitching machine, something he's never done before.
Sunday--Dad stayed home with Rhiannon from church. She is much improved from Thursday, but still not 100%. I told my "volcano" story to all the Primary kids as an example of how prayers are answered, and they were very appreciative of a crazy story like that. The Junior Primary made "mad faces" for me, while one kid in Senior Primary couldn't understand why I still wanted to go nuts after I'd said a prayer. He's a kid I consistently admire for his sense of humor and understanding of the gospel! One cute girl came up to me after church and said, "Sister Cushing, I am SO glad that nice nurse stopped you from blowing up." Me, too!
Monday--We all have the day off, but what to do? It's up in the air, so we'll play things by ear.
