Wade has discovered The Berenstain Bears, both the books and the little TV episodes (which he's DVRed). I love it, I love it, I love it.
I complimented Wade this morning on always waking up on his own and jumping in the shower. He gave me this huge hug. I hope he keeps that good habit always!
Sat through another of Wade's playoff games last night. They won, so they'll continue to play. I'm excited for him and his team, but I'm also beyond ready to reclaim family home evening nights and our other relaxed evenings. Baseball has kind of taken over our lives since February.
Two words from Jason on Facebook: "pneumonia sux." He felt sick on travel last week and got worse quickly. After 4+ days of a 5-alarm headache, passing out, a trip to urgent care, blood work, and x-rays, he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Saturday was a really bad day; on Sunday the world tilted right side up again as he started to feel a little better.
I knew Jason was really sick when I gave him a bell to ring if he needed anything (he'd been living in our bedroom upstairs) and he didn't say one word about it, just nodded his head and mouthed "okay." That was on Saturday, the really bad day.
I let the kids jump in the icy pool after school yesterday, since the water chemistry had checked out as pretty much perfect. I don't know how they did it, but they absolutely loved it and did not want to get out after 30 minutes!!!
Jason and I mapped out some plans for the Cushing San Diego reunion. It was fun and brought back good memories of planning out other big trips. We can't wait for July's Texas trip, too!
Rhiannon didn't want to go to the baseball game last night, so I told her that she needed to clean up the very messy kitchen while we were gone. She did a great job!
She also CANNOT wait for her birthday next week. She's been scouring clothing websites lately for gift ideas--it's kind of weird and exciting to have a kid pass that "toy" stage.
Rhiannon is considering getting her ears pierced, too. This is a big deal. That scene in The Parent Trap where they use a needle and an orange? Well, I thought that had traumatized her for life. But she's growing up and wants to try something new!
Last night I was trying to remember what day it was, and I was shocked that it was only Monday. Usually time flies, but not lately! :)

Love grows
Jason and I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary on Monday! We had a great lunch buffet at Golden Dragon and had a good dinner of chicken primavera that night. It's hard to party on a Monday, but I'm glad we could spend some time together! I love you, babe! Every year gets better!!!
I slipped a list in Jason's suitcase when he left for Nevada yesterday--this one may be a little different:
14 Reasons Why I Love Jason
Dependable and responsible
Loyal and reliable
Hard-working!
Handsome, sexy, great kisser
Faithful priesthood holder
Great sense of humor, fun to be with
Generous and thoughtful
Good at "keeping it real"
Super smart and intelligent
Great dad to our kids!
Makes me feel safe
Inspires me to be a better person
Sets goals and accomplishes them
My best friend!
What a difference from last year...
Oh, man, our garden is growing! The weeds are growing, too, but that's okay. We've already eaten lots of radishes. I'm going to throw some of the cilantro in a salsa today, and before long we'll have some zucchini and tomatoes and snap peas, too. The kids ate some cute little strawberries off that plant over the weekend. The green onions have been a total bust, but everything else is thriving! It is AWESOME!!!
I really hope these zucchini plants hang in there--I am dreaming of chocolate zucchini bread!
This makes me happy, too. Last year we had one tiny little cluster of cilantro--this year is better!
Toby the Herbivore
Ahhh, science fair projects. Wade had fun learning about animals and trying to figure out what they ate by studying their teeth. There were lots of fun Internet resources and one cool book from the library that he looked at.
I thought Wade did a great job with this chart! He used info from skullduggery.com's "Animal Bites."
Toby gets to pose in front of the science project done in his honor!
I'll get pictures of Rhiannon's when she brings it home. She studied the heart and circulatory system and made a model of the heart with play dough. It turned out pretty cool!
Camping with 5th graders
The Details:
3-day Camping Field Trip to San Diego with 5th graders
60 kids, 13 adults
Set up camp and tents at San Diego Metro KOA (NICE hot showers)
Visited USS Midway, the beach on Coronado, and Robotics lab at Legoland
Chaperone duties:
Make meals for a crowd
Herd students like cattle
Time showers
Try to help homesick kids
Supervise, supervise, supervise
Keep tent groups with you at destinations
etc.
Downside:
Very little sleep
Preteen girl emotional drama (thankfully Rhiannon didn't cause any)
A tear in our tent
Upside:
For the most part, the kids were amazing!
Rhiannon's teachers were amazing and so organized!
The other chaperones were fun!
The food was pretty good!
The places we visited were NEAT!
Rhiannon and I would go again in a heartbeat!
Jason and Wade managed very well without us girls around for 3 days, too. Wade went with Dad to Scouts one night, and they watched Gone in 60 Seconds on Friday night. They ate pizza, KFC, and restaurant food. Jason said Wade didn't want to do too much--my guess was he was still recuperating from his cold. Many thanks to our friends Katie and Heidi who watched Wade before and after school so Jason could carry on a normal work schedule, too.
Jason wanted to surprise us by opening up the pool while we were gone. When he took the tarp cover off, he saw that the pool was brown and disgusting! We didn't realize that the few puddles we saw consistently on top of the tarp were from small holes in the tarp. Those holes, combined with the crazy wind we've had, made quite a mess of the pool. We're going on Day 6 now of Operation Pool Cleanup and it's looking MUCH BETTER. Fingers crossed, it'll be good to go by Rhiannon's birthday! :)

Ready to conquer the world
It's amazing what a simple orientation can do for you. This past week Rhiannon went on a field trip with other fifth graders to the middle school she'll be attending. She was very impressed and excited by the tour. The guides were so nice, too! She said, "If it wasn't for the 5th grade field trip next week, I'd want to go to middle school RIGHT NOW!"
I'll be honest, middle school was not a cake walk for me. I'm sure some good came out of it, but mostly those three years are this blank, unhappy, awkward spot in my memory. I have to force myself to retrace my steps through that time and pick out happy moments. It's weird, especially since I consider myself a very optimistic person. Yearbook staff was high on the happy list, while puberty was...not. Enough said.
Rhiannon, thankfully, is not me. She is ready, wants to try new things (band), and seems genuinely excited about it. The one thing she is sad to lose is recess time, but I think she'll get over that, too, with all the walking from class to class and the separate PE class every day.
Wednesday night we went to the middle school's open house. It was just what the doctor ordered. As we walked onto the campus, the first things I saw were the cafeteria, library, and girls bathroom. Just knowing where those were located, well, it changed my whole perspective. I got excited for Rhiannon, too! We spent some time in the book fair there (wise choice--so much better options than the elementary school book fair), talked with the principal and assistant principal, saw lots of people we knew (including old friends from kindergarten), checked out the girls PE locker room ("Rhiannon, nobody showers in here. Just use lots of deodorant!"), and met a couple teachers. It was a fabulous night--we both came away happy, with thoughts on the good, and not full of worries.
Bring it, 6th grade!

Fast week
This past week is already becoming a blur--it went by so quickly!
Monday was a sub day in a wonderful 2nd grade class, followed by field trip meetings in the evening. I hated to mess up family home evening time, but I'm also glad I went to the meeting because there was a LOT of helpful information that I needed to get. I'll be going with Rhiannon and most of her 5th grade down to San Diego for 3 days next week as a chaperone. There's a fair amount of things I need to do to get ready, including getting the wonderful Mr. Mom (aka Jason) everything he and Wade need in my absence.
Tuesday was Stay At Home with Sick Boy Wade Day. I did lots of laundry that day, too. Wade missed his last regular baseball game that day, but he should be okay to play in the playoffs!
Wednesday I spent some time preparing items for the Mother's Day craft we're doing in Primary tomorrow. That evening Jason and I "divided and conquered"--he took Wade to the high school drumline concert to watch one of the young men in our ward, and then Wade went to Mutual with him. Rhiannon and I went to the middle school open house (more on that in the next post!), and then we went to the church for a wonderful Mother/Daughter activity with all the other Activity Day girls. The girls did a talent show and there were yummy refreshments, too. Rhiannon played the piano and showed some artwork she'd drawn.
Thursday was Errand Day--WalMart, post office, library, grocery shopping, Walgreens. Happy Belated Anniversary to Brett and Jaymie that day, too!
Yesterday was Stay At Home with Sick Boy Wade AGAIN Day and get him to the doctor. He had a low-grade fever and had been cough, cough, coughing all week long. Thankfully he didn't have any secondary infections, just a bad cold. Jason came home early from work, the boys packed up the van (including some hopefully good cough medicine from the doctor), and then they left for the Father/Sons Campout! I hope they had half as much fun as Rhiannon and I did last night!
Our girls night included:
--driving around in Dad's fast little car
--going to the Disney movie Prom
--going shopping at a cute boutique store called YouNique
--getting burgers at Carl's Jr and talking, talking, talking
--finishing off the night with another movie--Willow!
